CATERHAM is a village, parish and terminus of the Caterham branch of the South Eastern railway, the station being in Caterham Valley, about three quarters of a mile east from Caterham, 18 ½ miles from London, 7 south from Croydon, north from Godstone and 5 north-east from Redhill, in the North Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Godstone petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Godstone rural deanery, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. Gas is supplied to private houses by the Caterham and District Gas Company Limited. The parish is supplied with water by the East Surrey Water Company, who obtain their water from wells 874 feet deep, and supply the parishes of Caterham, Godstone, Bletchingley, Chipstead, Gatton, Outwood, Hawley, Nutfield, Redhill and a portion of Reigate, on each side of the roads; the water is softened by Clark’s process, by which the chalk is precipitated and the water becomes as soft as ordinary rain water: a boring was made in 1882 by the diamond rock-boring machine; and in 1881 the Kenley waterworks were added to the system. The old church of St. Lawrence is a small, plain and very old building, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western turret, containing 2 bells: it has been restored at a cost of £250, and is now used as a Sunday school.

The new church of St. Mary, consecrated in 1866 and situated opposite, is an edifice of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, west porch and a tower with spire at the south-west angle: there are no bells. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £312, net income £231, with 5 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Miss Hesse, of Haslemere, and held since 1878 by the Rev. James Nevill Heard M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, domestic chaplain to the Earl of Winterton. The Catholic church of the Sacred Heart, opened in 1881 by his Eminence Cardinal Manning, is an edifice of Reigate, Box and Bargate stone, in the Early English style: it is cruciform in plan, and consists of sanctuary, nave, south aisle, transepts, Lady chapel, a sacristy with organ chamber over, and the base of a tower at the south-west angle, finished as a porch, with a gabled roof, and a shingled fleche above the crossing: the stained east window contains a series of figure subjects, including “The Last Supper,” “Christ Weeping over Jerusalem,” “The Crucifixion,” Mary Magdalene at the feet of our Lord” and “The Sacred Heart:” the high altar is of marble, alabaster and mosaics, and the reredos of Caen atone, surmounted by a throne for benediction, constructed of coloured marble and white alabaster elaborately carved: the font, of Caen stone, supported upon a centre with surrounding shafts of marble, and on the four faces of the bowl are sunk panels with appropriate carvings: there are 300 sittings: a presbytery, connected with the church by a covered cloister, occupies the upper portion of the site, abutting on the main, road, and a school was erected in 1881. In the Coulsdon road there is a mission room in connection with the parish, church. The Metropolitan District Asylum for chronically insane persons and imbeciles, erected in 1870, is situated in the upper part of the parish, adjoining Chaldon and Coulsdon and surrounded by a farm of 100 acres: the building is of white brick, with red brick facings, string bands and dressings, and consists of 13 blocks and a chapel, with a detached block for infectious cases, six for males and seven for females; there is a recreation hall, seating 800 persons, with a permanent stage; dances are given weekly, attended by the asylum band, and there is a spacious cricket ground; the asylum is supplied with water from an artesian well 360 feet in depth, and has a water tower fitted with steam apparatus, by which hot water is conveyed to any part of the building: the asylum is arranged to hold 945 males and 1,107 females, and most of the officers are resident. Adjoining the asylum are Barracks for the recruits of the brigade of foot guards; these were finished in 1877, and correspond in style to the asylum; they will hold 680 men and 5 officers; the water is obtained from the asylum, and gas is also laid on. The military chapel, opened Feb. 16th, 1887, and situated within the area of the barracks, was erected by the War Office, supplemented by private subscriptions and is designed in the Gothic style of the 13th century; it comprises a chapel for Catholic soldiers, and will seat 600.
