Gas is supplied to private houses by the Caterham and District Gas Company Limited. The parish is supplied with water by the East Surrey Water Company, who obtain their water from wells 874 feet deep, and supply the parishes of Caterham, Godstone, Bletchingley, Chipstead, Gatton, Outwood, Hawley, Nutfield, Redhill and a portion of Reigate, on each side of the roads; the water is softened by Clark’s process, by which the chalk is precipitated and the water becomes as soft as ordinary rain water: a boring was made in 1882 by the diamond rock-boring machine; and in 1881 the Kenley waterworks were added to the system.
