Historical Description

CHALDON is a village and parish, 17 ½ miles from London, 5 ½ north-east from Reigate and 2 north-east from Merstham station on the South Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wallington hundred, Reigate union and petty sessional division, Redhill county court district, rural deanery of Reigate, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, which dates from about 1100, is a structure of rubble and flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, St. Catherine’s and the Lady chapel and a tower with spire at the south-west angle, containing one bell: the church was restored and reseated in 1870, at a cost of £350, and during the course of the restoration a fresco, supposed to date from about 1200, was discovered on the west wall; it represents the Ladder of the Salvation of the Human Soul, and the Way to Heaven, and is divided into two parts by a horizontal band of clouds, the lower part depicting the torments of the damned, the upper the Salvation of the blest: in 1869 the chancel was restored and a stained window placed in the chancel by Mrs. Pickersgill, of Netherne House, Merstham: there are 100 sittings, 30 being free. The register dates from the year 1564, and states that “one other register there is yet to be seen.” The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £272, net in come £224, with house and 31 acres of glebe, in the gift of James Upton esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Gilbert Edward Belcher M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. There are charities of £2 15s. annual value. The principal landowners are Lord Hylton, who is lord of the manor, William, Gardner esq. and the trustees of James B. Taylor esq. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 1,643 acres; rateable value, £2,112; the population in 1881 was 185.
