Historical Description

CHIDDINGFOLD is a parish and village, situated on the high road from London to Chichester, on the Sussex border, 2 ¼ miles south from the Witley and Chiddingfold station, 40 miles from London, 7 south from Godalming and 5 north-east from Haslemere, in the South Western division of the county, petty sessional division of Guildford, Godalming hundred, Guildford and Godalming county court district, Hambledon union, Godalming rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Early English style and consists of chancel with, north and south aisles, nave with an arcade of four arches, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 6 bells; it was restored in 1870, a north aisle added and the tower raised 14 feet, at a cost of nearly £4,000: there are four stained windows, including the east window of three lights: in the north aisle is a memorial brass to Edward Turnour, 4th Earl of Winterton, d. 1 March, 1879, and tablets to Jane (Chapman) Countess of Winterton, wife of Edward, second earl, d. 1792, as well as to Edward, third earl, d. 6th Jan. 1833, and his wife Lucy Louisa (Heys), d. 26 Oct. 1846: there are 500 sittings. The register of burials dates from the year 1563; baptisms, 1598; marriages, 1564. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £509, net income £350, with residence and 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Charles Sloggett M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1871. The parish institute was erected in 1877, at the sole cost of the Rev. Canon Lewis Macnaughton Humbert, late rector, in memory of his Son Francis Albert, who was drowned at Moordown, near Bournemouth, in the year 1876. A charity of £15 yearly, left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died Jan. 30, 1628, is given to the poor during Easter; a sum of 10s. is also given to the poor out of the parish rates, in lieu of one acre of land sold by the parish officers. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 7,019 acres; rateable value, £8,629; the population in 1881 was 1,332. Combe Courtis the residence of George Henry Pinckard esq. J.P. James S. Hodgson esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are G. H. Pinckard esq. J.P. John Ryde esq. James Sadler esq. Thomas Sadler esq. Charles Sadler esq. James Stilwell esq. Alfred Sadler esq. and William Trotter esq.

Sydenhurst, half a mile south-west, is the residence of William Trotter esq. Pickhurst is one mile south-east. Pickhurst. the seat of John Ryde esq. erected in 1884, is a mansion of red brick, with window mullions &c. of woodwork: the hall, which is the full height of the two floors, is panelled in walnut, with a screen and gallery across the end of the same material, and a fireplace of Portland stone, with a large grate for burning logs: the dining room and billiard room have each wide chimney corners; the walls of the former being panelled in walnut, and the beams and joists of the ceiling wrought and moulded: the whole of the principal staircase and the panelling of the main corridor is also of walnut. Cherfold is the residence of James Sadler esq. Langhurst, one mile south of Witley station, is the residence of Col. T. S. Walford. Combe Court, 2 miles north-west; Gostrode, a mile and a half south; Killinghubst, 2 miles south; Pockford, 2 miles east.
