Historical Description

CHIPSTEAD is a parish 4 ½ miles north from Reigate and 2 north-west from Merstham station on the South Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill county court district, and rural deanery of Reigate, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Margaret is a cruciform structure, faced with unbroken flints and supposed to date from the end of the 12th century; it comprises a chancel, nave, aisles, transepts and a massive central tower, containing 5 bells. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £364, with 46 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Hylton, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles Gordon Young. There are charities of £16 annual value. Shabden is the seat of John Garratt Cattley esq. J.P. Lord Hylton, who is lord of the manor, and John G. Cattley esq. are the principal landowners.

The soil is mixed; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area is 2,460 acres; rateable value, £3,992; the population in 1881 was 644.

Chiphouse Wood is 1 ½ miles west.
