Historical Description

CHOBHAM is an extensive parish and village, situated on the Bourne, a feeder of the Wey, 24 miles from London, 9 north from Guildford, 6 south-west from Chertsey and about 3 ½ north-west from Woking station on the South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Godley hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Lawrence is an ancient edifice of stone, rubble and flint, in the Norman and Late Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, divided from the nave by five Pointed arches upon Norman piers, west porch and a western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: there is an oak chest, formerly used for alms: the church was restored in 1866, at a cost of about £1,700; a screen was added in 1883 and a new organ was erected in 1890; there are 630 sittings, 230 being free. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1654; marriages, from 1655. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £17, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. W. Tringham M.A. rector of Busbridge, Godalming, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Herbert Sumner Acworth M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The lay impropriators are Sir Henry Denis Le Marchant bart. J.P. Sir William Neville Abdy bart. and the representatives of the late Mr, R. Rowland; the annual value is £507. The chapel of ease, erected at West End in 1842, and enlarged in 1890 at a cost of £1,000, is a building of stone in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel and nave, and will seat 370 persons; it is endowed with £40 yearly. There are also a Wesleyan and two Baptist chapels. The charities are of about £100 yearly for distribution and £25 for the repair of the church. There are three hills, supposed to be barrows. Many Roman and other coins have been found and the remains of old camps and Roman roads are discernible. Chobham Place, on the northern side of the village, is the seat of Sir Henry Denis Le Marchant bart. J.P. In Chobham Park are the remains of an ancient mansion, in which died Nicholas Heath, archbishop of York (1555—60). Westcroft belongs to Capt. Stewart Dyer; and Highams to Henry Pige Leschallas esq. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are W. J. Collyer esq. Sir Henry Denis Le Marchant bart. and Henry Pige Leschallas esq. The country is level, chiefly arable; soil, sand; subsoil, sand and ironstone; it is peculiarly favourable for the growth of American plants: the fir tree and the Spanish chesnut, some fine specimens of both of which may be seen at Chobham Place, grow well here: in some parts the scenery approaches to wild grandeur. In the neighbourhood are several chalybeate springs. The area is 9,558 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £10,863; the population in 1886 was 2,449.

Lucas Green, 2 ½ miles west; Colony, 3 ½ miles west; West End, Fellow Green & Valley End, each 2 ½ miles west, are in this parish.

The Gordon Boys’ Home, situated at West End, & founded in 1885 as a national memorial to the late Major-Gen. C. G. Gordon C.B. was built by subscription, at a cost of about £23,500, & is available for 240 homeless & destitute boys, between the ages of 14 & 18, who, besides a thorough general education, are instructed in various trades & trained for a naval, military or civil life, the choice of a career being left entirely to the individual taste of the boys; it is supported solely by voluntary contributions; commandant, Major-Gen. H. Tyndall C.B.; staff officer, Major G. Collins; office, 20 Cockspur street, London S.W. (Lieut.-Col. G. A. Beaty-Pownall, sec).
