COBHAM, formerly Coveham, is a parish, situated on the river Mole and on the main road from London to Portsmouth and Southampton, with a station on the Surbiton and Guildford line of the London and South Western railway, 3 ¾ miles south from Weybridge, 4 ½ south from Esher, 5 north-west from Leatherhead, 9 west from Epsom and 17 ½ from London, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Elmbridge, Kingston petty sessional division, Epsom union and county court district, rural deanery of Leatherhead, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The village is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1872. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing a clock and 5 bells: it was repaired and repewed in 1853, and in 1866 was enlarged and restored: in 1850 an organ was presented by Miss C. Molesworth, and in 1872 the south aisle was ceiled in oak, at a cost of £200, raised by subscription: there are sittings for 800 persons, of which 600 are free: in the churchyard, on the north side of the church, is a large marble tomb, to Harvey Combe esq. of the City of London. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £224, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Charles Combe esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Thomas Jervis-Edwards M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are Congregational, Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. The charities amount to about £64 annual value, and are distributed in bread and clothing. The extensive ironworks formerly existing in this parish were purchased and converted into saw mills by C. Combe esq. D.L., J.P. in 1866. The river Mole abounds with pike, carp and trout, and is consequently much frequented by anglers; Cobham Park, through which it flows, is the seat of Charles Combe esq. D.L., J.P.; a very fine house, built of Bargate and Portland stone, was erected in 1874, partly on the site of the old mansion. A little beyond the lodge gate are the paddocks. The Hut is the residence of Col. John Hickinbotham Chambers D.L., J.P. Knowle Hill, of John Earley Cook esq. Poynters, Samuel William Deaeon esq. and Pyports, His Honor Judge Lushington. In Street Cobham is the Working Men’s Hall, an iron building, erected in 1878, by C. J. Leaf esq. and open from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m. The Rev. Francis John Mount.
