Historical Description

COMPTON is a village and parish, 2 miles north-west from Godalming and 4 south-west from Guildford, in the South-western division of the county, hundred of Godalming, Guildford union and petty sessional division, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a low tower, with small spire, containing a clock and 3 bells: the chancel has a groined roof, above which is a chapel, accessible by a staircase from within: these portions are of Early English character, but other parts of the structure exhibit Decorated work and above the communion table is a fine Norman arch with double dog-tooth ornament: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. George More Molyneux, d. 1874, and there are seven others: there is also a lepers’ window and piscinae in the chancel and south aisle: in the nave are brass effigies of one Jennings and his wife and a brass, to Mrs. Sarah Oliver Faviell, 1879: over the pulpit is a carved oak canopy: the chancel has been restored at an expense of upwards of £400, the principal part of which was defrayed by a former rector, the Rev. G. More Molyneux: the church was restored in 1869 and has 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £337, net yearly value £317, with residence and 38 acres of glebe, in the gift of Wm. More Molyneux esq. of Loseley Park, near Guildford, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Hugh Hodgson Gillett M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The charities amount in all to about £19 yearly, and are chiefly expended in clothing and blankets. A coffee house was opened in 1881, and is entirely supported by Miss Hagart. Polsted Manor is the residence of Major-Gen. Lord William Frederick Seymour. William More Molyneux esq. Colonel James McC. Hagart C.B. and John King esq. who are lords of the manors of Westbury, Eastbury and Field Place respectively, and William F. Faviell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is a light loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat barley, oats, mangolds and turnips. The area is 1,878 acres: rateable value £4,438; the population in 1881 was 472.
