Historical Description
COULSDON (or Cullesden) is a parish and village, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wallington hundred, Croydon petty sessional division, union and county court district, archdeaconry of Kingston, rural deanery of Beddington and diocese of Rochester, 16 miles from London by road and 6 south from Croydon. The village is east of the old Brighton road and the houses scattered. Purley station in this parish, is 3 ½ miles north from the village, Kenley station on the Caterham branch is 2 miles east and Coulsdon station is near Cane Hill Asylum. The church of St. John the Evangelist is a plain building of brick and stone of the 13th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing a clock and 5 bells, re-hung in 1881; there are four stained windows: in the chancel, which is unusually long, is an ancient sedile and an old monument: there are 224 sittings, 74 being free. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £668, with 73 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1878 by the Rev. David Dale Stewart M.A. of Exeter College Oxford, and Hon. Canon of Rochester & Pluralities Act Commissioner for Kingston archdeaconry. The charities are £20 yearly, distributed in bread and clothing. On Farthing Down, in this parish, are barrows, supposed to be British, some of which were opened in 1871. Not far from the church and standing in a fine wooded park, is Coulsdon Court, the seat of Edmund Byron esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. James Hall, Edmund Byron, George and Vernez Hall, George Armstrong esqrs. and John Young J.P. of Kenley house, Kenley. The County Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Cane Hill, 2 miles south of Purley station, was opened in December 1883: the buildings, adjoining the Brighton main road, will hold 1,124 patients, but are now (1890) being enlarged for 900 additional patients: the buildings at present occupy an area of 12 acres, and are arranged in detached blocks, radiating from a centre and connected by covered ways, communicating with the central offices: the rooms for the committee, the superintendent, and assistant medical officers and clerks’ office, occupy the centre of the front, on each aide of which are placed the wards: in a court behind stands the chapel, an edifice of brick and stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and transepts, and seating 800 persons: next the chapel is a recreation and dining hall, with a stage at one end and balcony at the other: this room will seat 500 persons: the scullery and kitchen adjoin the hall, and in the rear are the larders and stewards’ stores, laundry, washhouses and drying closets: still further on are the builders’ yard and workshops: besides the main buildings, the institution includes a cottage hospital for 16 patients with the necessary offices: the asylum, which was designed by Mr. C. H. Howell, the county architect, has been built at a cost of £198,640. The soil is clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,313 acres; rateable value, £40,127; the population in 1881 was 3,589.
At Reedham, in this parish, is the Asylum for Fatherless Children of both sexes, who are received from their earliest infancy to the age of 15 years; it was founded in the year 1844, by the Rev. Andrew Reed D.D and is supported by voluntary contributions: the present building was erected in 1856 and will hold 300 children. The Congregational church, erected in 1881 as a memorial to the late Rev. Dr. Aveling, of Kingsland, who had for 30 years acted as honorary treasurer to the charity, is a plain stone building, with a turret containing one bell, and is principally for the use of the inmates of the Asylum.
National School (mixed), rebuilt in 1888, for 112 children; average attendance, 80.
