Historical Description

Cranley, about two miles to the right of our road, is supposed by Mr. Salmon, to derive its name from a Heronry here, when the breed of herons or cranes was encouraged for the sake of hawking them; and he adds, that "we may, from the history of Rufus, conclude that this fowl was once a delicious morsel, for he disgraced one of his chief nobility, who had the care of his table, for setting before him a crane but half-roasted. Perhaps these martial conquering stomachs fed upon creatures of prey and ravage, that the juices might be impregnated with a savage disposition, which, above all things, they indulged."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CRANLEIGH (or Chanley) is a village and parish, extending to the Sussex border, with two stations on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 49 miles from London and 8 south-east from Guildford and 7 south-east from Godalming, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, Guildford petty sessional division, Guildford and Godalming county court district, Hambledon union, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester. The river Wey and the Wey and Arun Canal pass near here. There is a lake, nearly half a mile in length, near Whitehall. There are gas works here, erected in 1875, and also waterworks, the latter being supplied from the chalk springs near Nore, where new works were erected in 1886, and there are two reservoirs of 100,000 gallons each. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave with arcades of four arches, transepts, aisles with south chapel, south porch and a western tower containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells: there are 12 stained windows, including the east and west windows, the latter, erected in 1862, being a memorial to the Hon. Mrs. Caroline Sapte: in the tower is a stained window, inserted in 1881, in memory of the wife of E. C. Healey esq. and there are other memorial windows to Mrs. Townsend and to Miss Rolli: the south porch was built in 1864 as a memorial to the late Jacob Ellery, and the lych gate in 1880, as a tribute to the late J. Bradshaw esq.: the church was restored in 1845: Baynard’s chantry or chapelry adjoining the south aisle and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, originally had its regular officiating chaplain, who about 1,300 was paid £4 1s. 6d. yearly: King Edward II. on the 27th October, 1321, presented John of Brugge to the chaplaincy of this chantry: the chancel retains sedilia and a piscina: there are 700 sittings, about half being free. The register dates from the year 1608. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £1,174, net income £812, with residence and 205 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir H. W. Peek bart. and held since 1847 by the Ven. John Henry Sapte M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, archdeacon of Surrey and canon of Winchester. The churchyard is under the control of a burial board of 8 members, the rector being chairman. Here is a Baptist chapel, built in 1889 at a cost of £800, and a Congregational chapel. A sum of about £23 yearly from a charity left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, is distributed in calico. Peek bart. and his son, consists of a club house, with coffee, reading and billiard rooms attached; James Henry Holden, secretary. Baynards, the seat of Thomas Wm. According to the Pipe Roll of 2 Henry II. it remained in the Crown until the time of King Stephen, 1135, when the king gave it to his natural son William de Blois, Earl of Moreton, in Normandy, who married Isabel de Warren, daughter of the Earl of Surrey; and it was subsequently held by the families of Braose, De Bray and More, then by the Duke of Montagu and the Earl of Onslow.
