Historical Description
CROWHURST is a village and parish close to the South Eastern railway, 2 miles east from Godstone station, 2 ½ north from Lingfield station, 4 south-east from Godstone, 10 south-east from Reigate, 24 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Reigate county court district, Godstone union and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Godstone, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. George is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south chapel, south porch and a western tower with octagonal broach spire, containing 3 bells: in the chancel are two altar tombs with full length brass effigies in plate armour, and an inscription to John Gainsford, ob. 1450, and John Gainsford, ob, 1460; here also is a cast iron slab with inscription in bold raised letters to “Ane Forster, daughter of Thos. Gainsford,” ob. 1591, and on the floor of the nave is a fine brass to Richard Cholmley, cup-bearer to Charles I. ob. 1634: the church was thoroughly restored about 1886: there are 130 sittings; in the churchyard is a yew tree, measuring 32 ½ feet in circumference at 3 feet from the ground, and supposed to be upwards of 1,500 years old. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1567; marriages, 1573. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £114, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Earl of Cottenham, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Reginald Whitfeld Curteis M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The charities, of which a charity of £15 yearly, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, is the most important, average about £18 yearly for clothing. Crow-hurst Place, now a farm house, was the seat of the Gainsford family, and the fine old house and garden are still surrounded by a moat forming an extensive sheet of water. This place gives the title of viscount to the Pepys family, Earls of Cottenham. The trustees of the Earl of Cottenham (a minor) and G. Leveson-Gower esq. who have each the manorial rights of their land, and the trustees of St. Alban’s charity, are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and roots. The area is 2,119 acres; rateable value, £2,597; the population in 1871 was 250 and in 1881 was over 426, including a number of workmen, on the railway being constructed from Croydon to East Grinstead.
National School (mixed), built in 1862, for 80 children; average attendance, 44.
