Historical Description

CUDDINGTON is a parish and lay appropriation, adjoining Ewell on the north and east, and containing a scattered population and a few farm houses, in the Mid division of the county, Epsom petty sessional division, union and county court district and hundred of Copthorne. In this parish, and about three-quarters of a mile north-east from Ewell, formerly stood the Palace of Nonsuch, built by Henry VIII. and pulled down by Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, in the reign of Charles II: a modern house, built at some distance from the site of the palace, which is about 1 ½ miles south-east of Ewell station, still preserves the name, and is the residence of Captain William Robert Gamul Farmer D.L., J.P.: it is a large edifice in the Elizabethan style, with embattled parapets and turrets, and was erected from the designs of Sir Jeffrey Wyattville; the park, of about 2,000 acres, contains some magnificent forest trees. The Rev. Edward R. Northey, of Epsom, lord of the manor and lay impropriator and Captain William R. G. Farmer D.L., J.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is marl and clay; subsoil, stone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,860 acres; rateable value, £8,611; the population in 1881 was 542.

Worcester Park, which has a station on the Epsom and Leatherhead line of the London and South Western railway, about 11 miles from London, is principally in Cuddington parish, but small portions are in Malden and Ditton. Here is a small temporary iron church, with sittings for 300 persons. Worcester Park House is the residence of Augustus Wheeler esq.
