Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
DORKING is an ancient market and union town and parish, head of a petty sessional division and county court district, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wotton hundred, rural deanery of Dorking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester: it is situated on the river Mole, on the road from London to Horsham and the Roman road of Stone Street, in the valley on the south side of Box Hill and the North Downs, 6 miles west from Reigate, 12 east from Guildford and 24 from London by road, and is well provided with railway service, having two stations on the South Eastern (Reading and Reigate branch) and the London, Brighton and South Coast (Horsham, Dorking and Leatherhead line); the distance from London by the former being 29 miles and the latter 26 miles; Box Hill station on the South Eastern railway is situated at the northern extremity of the town. The town is well paved, lighted with gas and supplied with excellent water by a company from works situated at Wescott and the Redland Woods, and is governed by a local board, formed in 1881 and consisting of 12 members. The parish is divided into five boroughs-Eastborough (comprising the east of Dorking, Pippbrook, Deepdene and West Betchworth); Chipping borough (the remainder of the town); Milton borough; Wescott borough, with Bury Hill; and Holmwood borough, with Holm wood Common and Holmsdale.
The church of St. Martin, the foundation stone of which was laid by the late Bishop Wilberforce, May 29th, 1873, is a handsome structure of the Decorated or Second Pointed style, the chancel of which was erected in 1866, at the expense of the late William Henry Forman esq. from designs by Mr. II. Woodger, of Graff ham, and the total cost, including the chancel, and improvements in the churchyard, was about £26,000; the building is externally of black flint and Bath stone, and internally of blue forest stone, and consists of chancel with vestry, clerestoried nave of four bays, transepts, north aisle, south porch and a western tower with pinnacles and spire, 210 feet in height, and containing 7 bells and a clock with chimes, presented by Mrs. Burt: the chancel has some fine stained windows, a handsome reredos and an oak screen, which has been enlarged, and divides the nave and chancel; at its base is a brass to the memory of a former vicar; there are 900 sittings, 400 being free. In the churchyard are the tombs of Abraham Tucker, a metaphysical writer, died 20th November, 1774, and Jeremiah Markland M.A. a distinguished scholar, died 7th July, 1776. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £449; net income £85, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Right Hon. George Cubitt P.C., M.P, D.L. and held since 1885 by the Rev. Edward Arthur Chichester M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Roman road runs under the churchyard.
St. Paul’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1857: the church, a modern building of flint with Portland stone dressings, in the Early Decorated or Geometrical style, was erected in 1857, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a turret at the west end containing one bell: the north aisle was added at the expense of John Labouchere esq. of Broom Hall: the south aisle was built by subscription in 1860: the chancel was improved and decorated at the expense of Thomas Stilwell esq. and a new organ was added in 1886: there are 600 sittings, 311 being free. The register dates from the year 1857. The living is a vicarage, endowed to about £380 gross, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Harry Charles Sturdy M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The population in 1881 was 2,861. There is a Catholic church, dedicated to St. Joseph, a Congregational chapel, Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1850 and enlarged in 1883, with 275 sittings; a Baptist chapel, erected in 1876, with sittings for 400; a meeting house for the Society of Friends, erected in 1846, seating 200 persons, and a Brethren Meeting house, erected in 1864, with about 300 sittings. The Cemetery is situated in Reigate road, and occupies 4 acres of ground; it contains two mortuary chapels, built in 1856, and is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. A Volunteer Drill Hall was erected in 1889 by the Right Hon. George Cubitt P.C., M.P: at a cost of £1,500. The Public Hall, situated in West street, and erected in 1872, is used for public business, meetings and concerts and will hold about 800 persons. The petty sessions and county court are also held in this building. A Cottage Hospital, towards which the Right Hon. G. Cubitt P.C., M.P. contributed £1,000 and to which other gentlemen in the neighbourhood have subscribed liberally, was built in the year 1876, on a piece of land near the Glory, given by the late Mrs. Hope, of Deepdene: it contains 15 beds; the yearly average number of in-patients for the three years 1887—9 was 100, and of out-patients 245. Cotmandene Almshouses are for 18 persons, who receive 5s. weekly and Curtis’s gift of 4s. twice a year. There are charities of about £500 annual value. Dorking is celebrated for its breed of poultry with 5 claws, of which there are three principal kinds, viz.:-“coloured,” “speckled or cuckoo” and “white.” The chief trade is in flour, corn, lime and agricultural implements. The corn market is held on Thursdays, and a fat stock market the first Thursday in every month; there is a fair on the day before Holy Thursday, for cattle. The Deepdene, a villa in the Italian style, is the seat of Lord Henry Francis Hope Pelham-Clinton-Hope; the grounds containing 431 acres, are beautifully laid out and include the Betchworth Castle and Chart Park estates. Bury Hill is the residence of Robert Barclay esq. and Milton Court the residence of Lachlan Mackintosh Rate esq. J.P. At Evershcd's Rough, near Dorking, Dr. Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Winchester, was killed by a fall from his horse, July 19th, 1873; the spot is marked by a memorial cross of granite, 10 feet high. The Duke of Norfolk K.G. is lord of the manor, in which the custom of Borough English, or succession of the younger son, prevails. The principal landowners are the Duke of Norfolk K.G. Lord Henry Francis Hope Pelham-Clinton-Hope, the Right Hon. George Cubitt P.C., M.P. and Robert Barclay esq. The area is 9,987 acres of land and 62 of water; the population (urban and rural) in 1881 was, of the parish 10,000, including 149 officers and inmates in the workhouse, and of the Local Board district 6,328; rateable value, £60,626.
Anstik Bury, 3 ½ miles south, is a circular entrenchment of 11 acres. White Downs, to the west, are 744 feet high.
Dorking Union
Board day, alternate Thursdays at the Workhouse at 11 a.m. The union comprises eight parishes, viz.-Abinger, Capel, Dorking, Effingham, Mickleham, Newdigate, Ockley & Wotton. The population of the Union in 1881 was 15,452; rateable value, £106,440. Rev. Geo. Wm. Hillyer, chaplain.
