Westcott History
WESTCOTT, or Westgate Street, is a hamlet in the parish of Dorking, a mile west from the town on the Guildford road, and, with the hamlet of Milton within the town of Dorking, was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1852; it is in the South Eastern division of the county, Wotton hundred, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of the Holy Trinity, situate on Westcott Heath, and consecrated in June, 1852, is a beautiful edifice of dressed flints in the Decorated style, from designs; by the late Sir G, G, Scott R.A.; it originally consisted of chancel, nave, north porch and a western turret containing a clock, placed in 1887, and one bell; to which a large south aisle has been added; the windows in the chancel and nave are stained; an organ was presented, by the Misses Barclay, of Rokefield, in 1872, and a lych gate was built in 1890 by public subscription: there are 400 sittings, 50 being free. The register dates from the year 1852. The Jiving is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with house, arising partly from two separate sums of £1,000, one bequeathed by the late Lady Mary Leslie, the other the gift of Charles Barclay esq. whose grandson, Robert Barclay esq. of Bury Hill, is the patron: it has been held since 1882 by the Rev. William Richard Lloyd M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The vicarage house is about half a mile on the Dorking side, erected at the sole expense of Charles Barclay esq. The Free church of St. John the Evangelist is endowed with £40 yearly, a parsonage house and land; the Rev. John Nash is the minister. There ar& charities of £13 annual value, distributed in bread to the poor every Sunday, and an endowment of £3 for a Sunday school, besides £3 for the repairs of the church. The Rookery, the seat of George Arthur Fuller esq. is a handsome residence, situated in the valley and surrounded by plantations, with a lake in the centre. The principal landowners are William John Evelyn esq. M.A, J.P. who is lord of the manor, George Arthur Fuller and Robert Barclay esqrs. The soil is sandy clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and corn. The area is 2,119 acres; the population in 1881 was 1,360.
