Historical Description

DUNSFOLD is a parish and village, 5 ½ miles south-east from Godalming, 4 south-west from Cranleigh station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, and 4 south-east from Witley station on the London and South Western railway, 40 from London and 8 east from Haslemere, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath first division, Guildford petty sessional division, Hambledon union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Mary is an ancient cruciform building of stone, in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch, and a western tower containing 3 bells: the east window is a memorial to William Muggeridge esq.: the chancel retains sedilia and two piscinae, and there is also a piscina in each transept, and a hagioscope and a niche in the north transept: in 1890 the arcade of a former south aisle was discovered: the oak benches are of considerable age: the chalice in use is dated 1566 and the cover 1578: an organ was presented in 1890 by Miss Billiter, of Durfold House: within the last decade (1880—90) a pilgrimage was made by Catholics from London to this church, which is reputed to be specially favoured by the presence of the Blessed Virgin: the chancel and transepts were restored in 1882 at a cost of about £1,200: there are 300 sittings, all being free. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent charge £421, net yearly value £356, with residence, recently restored and enlarged at a cost of £800, and 42 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Henry Winn M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, chaplain to the Duke of Abercorn. A charity of £18 yearly, left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died 30th of January, 1628, is for bread and clothing. Bricks and tiles are made here. George Barrett esq. is lord of Bramley West manor. The principal landowners are S. Barrow esq. the trustees of James Puttock esq. the trustees of John Napper esq. John Billiter esq. Joseph Godman esq. Samuel Hopewell esq. and George Barrett esq. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and some land in pasture; the soil is well adapted for the growth of oak timber and underwood. The area is 4,424 acres; rateable value, £3,411; the population in 1881 was 749.
