Historical Description

EFFINGHAM is a parish and pleasant scattered village, situated on the Upper London road, between Guildford and Leatherhead, 3 ½ miles west-south-west from Leatherhead, 8 east-north-east from Guildford, 4 ½ north-west from Dorking and 1 ½ south-west from Bookham station on the Leatherhead extension line of the London and South Western railway: Effingham Junction station is locally in Horsley: it is in the Mid division of the county and gives name to the hundred of Effingham, in Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, Leatherhead rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. This place confers the title of Earl on a branch of the Howard family. The church of St. Lawrence is an edifice of flint and brick in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, rebuilt with brick in 1757, and containing a clock and one bell; the east window is stained: there are 300 sittings. The register, in good preservation, dates from 1565. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £97, gross income £112, with residence and 9 acres of glebe, let for £10, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Ernest Frederick Bayly M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a small Wesleyan chapel, built in 1854. A charity of £11 yearly, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of. London, who died January 30, 1628, is distributed in bread. The manors in this parish are Effingham-le-Legh, Effingham and East Court; besides which, part of the parish is in the manor of Byfieet and other parts are in the manor of Little Bookham and East and West Horsley. Admiral Maxse, of Effingham Hill, and Colonel Evelyn Latimer Parratt (lords of the manors) and the Earl of Lovelace are principal landowners. The soil is a light marl; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,183 acres: rateable value, £4,451; the population in 1881 was 585.
