Historical Description

ELSTEAD is a parish and village, near the river Wey, 5 miles west from Godalming, in the South Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Farnham, Hambledon union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester: it is supposed to derive its name from having been the “station,” or “stead,” of Ella, founder of the kingdom of Sussex. The church of St. James is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, north porch and a western belfry of wood surmounted by a shingled spire and containing 3 bells; the earliest portion of the structure dates from the year 1128 and the east window of the chancel is a good specimen of Perpendicular work: the belfry stair is composed of one solid slab of oak, the steps being cut into it: the east window was fitted with stained glass in 1881, in memory of the late Lady Baynes, by her children. The church was thoroughly restored in 1872, when the south aisle was added, and has 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £278, net yearly value £230, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Surrey, and held since 1854 by the Rev. Joseph Rhodes Charlesworth M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a Congregational Chapel and a Young Men’s Institute and reading room. Smith’s charity of £5 was left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628. River House is the residence of Lady Jephson. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Captain Rushbrook, W, W. G. Cornwall esq. the trustees of Sir Richard Jephson bart. Col. Marshall, R. H. Coombe esq. and the Hon. Mrs. Kerr. The soil is partly light loam and sand; subsoil, gravel and sand. The crops are barley, wheat, carrots, potatoes and rye. The area is 6,125 acres, of which 3,600 acres are common land; rateable value, £3,686; the population in 1881 was 679.
