Historical Description

The pretty village of Ewell, anciently more considerable than at present, being the birth-place of Dr. Richard Corbet, Bishop of Oxford, who died in 1635.

The market at Ewell, has been discontinued for some years, but it has still two fairs, on May 12, and October 29. The numerous springs here form the head of Hog’s Mill river, which empties itself into the Thames, near Kingston. The road to Brighton no longer running through F. well is a circumstance felt by some of the inns. At the entrance of this place, through a double row of elm trees, was the grand roadway that led to Nonsuch. Here are several gentlemen’s seats.

Nearly opposite the church, is the semi-Gothic seat of Thomas Calverley, Esq. and near it, on the Kingston road, those of Lady Glyn, and Thomas Hursey Barratt, Esq. The gardens of the latter, railed Ewell Court, are very spacious, and contain several hot-houses and conservatories, filled with choice exotics and rare plants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EWELL, in Domesday “Etwell,” is a parish and pleasant little town, 13 miles from London, 1 mile north-east Epsom and 5 miles south-east from Kingston, and was once a market town; it is in the Mid division of the county, Copthorne hundred, Epsom petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Leatherhead, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. About half a mile to the south of the town is a station on the Croydon and Epsom branch of the London and Brighton railway and at the same distance on the north side is a station on the South Western branch railway from Wimbledon to Leatherhead. It is lighted with gas by the Epsom and Ewell Gas Co. and supplied with water by the Sutton Water Co. The ancient church of St. Mary, with the exception of the fine ivy-covered tower, now used as a mortuary chapel for the old churchyard, has been pulled down; the new parish church, erected at a cost of £7,174, on a site given by the late Rev. Sir George L. Glyn bart. sometime vicar, and consecrated 24 August, 1848, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 8 bells, six of which were in the first instance transferred from the old church: In 1890 two cracked bells were re-cast and two new ones added, to complete the peal of eight bells, at a cost of £250: in the chancel is a finely-carved marble figure of Sir William Lewen, knight, alderman and lord mayor of London, who died in 1717, as well as several ancient brasses and memorials removed from the old church, to the Monro, Calverley, Glyn, Lewen, Dowdeswell and Bulkeley families: of the numerous richly stained windows, ten are memorials, including the west window, erected in 1882 to the memory of Mrs. Gadesden, of Ewell Castle, and the east window, erected by public subscription at a cost of £357: the organ was presented by the late G. Torr esq. of Garbrand Hall and cost £1,100: Sir Richard Bulkeley bart. a religious enthusiast, died here 7th April, 1710, and was here buried: there are 1,000 sittings, 430 being free: the register dates from the year 1604: the living is a vicarage, average yearly value from the tithe rent-charge £191; gross income £245, with 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. Sir George Lewen Glyn bart. and held since 1890 by the Rev. John Thornton M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and chaplain to Lord Skelmersdale: a new vicarage house was built in 1884. The Congregational chapel is a building in the Gothic style, containing nearly 400 sittings, and was erected in 1864, at a cost of £2,223: a school and public lecture hall have been erected adjoining the chapel, at a cost of about £1,500. Charities of £70 yearly value are distributed in bread and clothing. Two fairs are held here annually, one on the 12th of May and one on the 29th of October, for sheep and cattle. Extensive pottery and brick and tile works are maintained on the Nonsuch estate, and there are two large flour mills, worked by water power from numerous springs rising in the town and neighbourhood, forming the head of the Hogs Mill river. Ewell was the birthplace in 1852 of Richard Corbet D.D. bishop of Oxford (1628—32) and of Norwich (1632—5). Ewell Castle, the seat of Augustus William Gadesden esq. J.P. was erected in the year 1804, and is a castellated mansion with octagonal turrets at the angles, and embattled parapets: in the grounds is the site of a banqueting house belonging to the palace of Nonsuch, built by King Henry the Eighth and situated in Cuddington parish; the remains are surrounded by a wall with bastions at intervals. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late. Rev. Sir George L. Glyn bart. A. W. Gadesden esq. J.P. Revs. Alexander H. Bridges M.A. rector of Beddington, and Edward W. Northey M.A. of Epsom; the latter is lord of Ewell; and Augustus William Gadesden esq. J.P. is lord of the manors of Fitzniel or Fitzniele, so called from Robert le Fitzniele, a former lord, of the reign of Edward III.; Buttailes, or Botolphs, from William de Battaile, temp. Hen. I. and that of Rookesley. The soil is clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 2,437 acres; rateable value, £18,017; the population of the parish in 1881 was 3,002, including 559 in Kensington and Chelsea district workhouse schools.
