Ewhurst, which derives its name from its woods, in which the yew-tree was formerly abundant.

EWHURST is a parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Cranley station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 35 from London and 12 south-east from Guildford, in the South-Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, Guildford petty sessional division, Hambledon union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, restored in 1838, is a cruciform building of stone in the Perpendicular style. Consisting of chancel, nave, transept, western porch and a central tower with shingled spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1614. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £599, net £322, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1845 by the Rev. John Mount Barlow M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. A charity of £50 yearly, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died Jan. 30, 1628, is for bread and clothing. Coverwood, 2 miles north, is the seat of Hugh Fortescue Locke-King esq. J.P. The principal landowners Hugh Fortescue Locke-King esq. Reginald Bray esq. (who is principal lord of the manor). Lord Abinger, J. Braby esq. J.P. of Maybanks, Walter Webb esq. and the Hon. E. F. Leveson-Gower, of Holmbury Park. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,531 acres; rateable value, £6,651; the population in 1881 was 892.
