Rowledge History

ROWLEDGE is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1871 from the civil parishes of Farnham and Frensham in Surrey, and Binsted in Hants, 3 miles south from Farnham, in the South Western division of the county, Farnham hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Farnham, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. James, situated in Hants, is an edifice in the Early English style, erected in 1871 at a cost of £1,530, and consists of chancel, nave, south-west porch and a tower on the north side, with a low spire and containing one bell: there are 211 sittings. The register dates from the year 1871. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £288, chiefly from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Arthur William Parker M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. There is a reading room and club for working men. Frensham Vale is the seat of John Keith Rennie esq. J.P. The Crown, J. K. Rennie esq. and Mrs. Taylor are the landowners. The soil is sandy and the land is chiefly woodland and heath. The area is 2,240 acres, of which 1,500 acres are in Hants; the population in 1881 was 903, of which 413 were in Hants.

National School (mixed), erected in 1872, for 205 children; average attendance, 140; number of children on roll, about 150.
