Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
FETCHAM is a parish and village, situated on the road from London to Guildford, and bounded on the east by the river Mole, 1 mile west from Leatherhead station, 6 miles north from Dorking, 5 south-west from Epsom and 19 from London, in the Mid division of the county, Copthorne hundred, Epsom petty sessional division, union and county court district, Leatherhead rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church (name unknown), supposed to have been erected in the 11th century, stands in Fetcham Park and is a cruciform structure of flint and stone in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, north porch and a tower on the south side containing a clock and 3 bells: the tower, together with a great part of the church, is overgrown with ivy: the interior was repaired and repewed in 1857 and again in 1877, when the south aisle was added by Mr. Hankey and the other part thoroughly restored and fitted with benches of massive oak: the chancel was restored, a reredos erected and vestry built in 1873, by the Rev. Sir E. G. Moon bart. rector, in memory of his father: the east and west windows are stained: the marble font was presented by Rev. Canon Bridges: there are 280 sittings, 80 being free. The register, in good preservation, dates from 1559. The living is a rectory, yearly value from tithe rent-charge £280, gross £550, with residence and 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of trustees of Lady Moon, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Sir Edward Graham Moon bart. M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford, and surrogate. There are charities of £81 annual value. Three almshouses were erected in 1886 by the rector and J. B. Hankey and Gervas Parnell esqrs. and a reading room has been built for the use of the poorer inhabitants. Here is an extensive flour mill, worked by the overflow from a spring pond, which covers seven acres of ground and discharges itself into the river Mole. Fetcham Park is the seat of John Barnard Hankey esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner: the other landowners are the trustees of Slyfield Manor and William Keswick esq. Eastwick Park, Bookham. The soil is marl; subsoil, chalk and flint. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,781 acres of land and 23 of water; rateable value, £4,248; the population in 1881 was 474.
National School (mixed), erected in 1854 & enlarged in 1886 at a cost of about £750, for 110 children; average attendance, 82.
