Historical Description

FRENSHAM is a village and parish, situated on the principal stream of the river Wey and on the Hampshire border of the county, 4 miles south from Farnham, in the South Western division of the county, hundred, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Farnham, rural deanery of Farnham, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The parish is divided into three tithings, viz:-Frensham, Chert or Churt and Pitfold. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an edifice of stone in the Norman and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel and nave and north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in the tower is preserved a large iron vessel known as the “Frensham Cauldron,” which traditionally belonged to Mother Ludlam, whose cave is still shown at Moor Park, Farnham, and is said to have been brought here by her in the night and left in the churchyard: on the north wall of the chancel, and within the communion rails, are the remains of a once handsome sculptured tomb including a stone coffin carved with a cross: the chancel retains a piscina and the east window is stained: on the south side of the church is a memorial window, erected in 1888, to the late Ven. Peter Righton Atkinson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, vicar here 1885—8, archdeacon of Surrey and canon of Winchester: there is also an ancient holy water stoup in the south wall near the door: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £562, net income £350, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Surrey, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Herbert Moody B.A. of London University. The adjacent tithing of Dockenfield, in Hants, formerly extra-parochial, is, for ecclesiastical purposes, attached to the church of Frensham. The charities amount to £25 yearly. Frensham Place, the residence of James Tisdall Woodroffe esq. is a handsome building of stone, erected in 1885, and picturesquely situated in about 150 acres of land.

Bichard Henry Combe esq. D.L., J.P. of Pierrepont, and Mrs. Taylor, are the principal landowners; the former is lord of the manor. The soil is various, some loamy and highly fertile; subsoil, mostly loam. The common land is extensive. The chief crops are hops and wheat. Frensham great pond is a magnificent sheet of water of nearly 90 acres (7 of which are in Hants); it is well stocked with perch, carp, pike and tench and affords good sport for anglers. The “White Horse,” better known as “Frensham Pond House,” provides good accommodation for persons wishing to stay in the neighbourhood. The smaller pond is not far off. The area is 9,341 acres; rateable value, £11,554; the population in 1881 was 998.
