Historical Description

FRIMLEY, formerly a chapelry in the parish of Ash, was formed into a separate parish in 1866, situated on the Hampshire border, with a station on the Ascot and Woking branch of the South Western railway, 8 miles north-east from Farnham and 30 from London; it is in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Godley, Farnham petty sessional division, county court district and union, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester: the Basingstoke canal runs through Frimley. The church of St. Peter which succeeded a chapel consecrated in 1606, is an edifice of stone, rebuilt in 1825; and consists of chancel and nave and a low embattled western tower containing a clock and 2 bells: in 1881 the church was restored and reseated and an organ added at a cost of £1,580: the vestry was built in 1884 at the cost of £184: the west end of the church was restored in 1888 and a north door was added, by subscription by the inhabitants, in commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee: the stained east window is a memorial to James Fitchell Burrell esq. of Frimley, who died 1858, and Joanna his wife, who died in 1869: there are two brasses, dated 1644, and in the middle of the church is a stone covering the vault of the Tichborne family, who resided at Frimley Park: there are 700 sittings, all being free. At Mitchell is an iron church erected is Dec. 1889, by subscription of the inhabitants, the site being given by the family of Mrs. Burrell, of the Manor House: it has 150 sittings and is served by the rector of Frimley. The register of baptisms dates from 1590; marriages and burials from 1606. The living is a rectory, average tithe-rent charge £182, net income £270, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Ash, and held since 1883 by the Rev. William Basset M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. A Gospel hall, with schools attached, has been erected by Thomas Boys esq. The charities amount to £35 yearly. The Manor House is the residence of Mrs. Burrell; Tekells is the seat of Major-General Thomas Edmund Byrne R.A., J.P.; Watchetts, Herbert John Butler Hollings esq. J.P.; Frimley Park, Mrs. Herries; Mytchett Place, of George James Murray esq. D.L., J.P. and Prior Place, of Frederick Hastings Goldney esq, The manor of Frimley belonged to the abbey of Chertsey: in the chartulary of this abbey, now in the Exchequer, is a rental of the manor, in which were 11 freehold tenants and 13 copyholders. Messrs. Payne and Brettel are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Thomas Boys esq. Frederick Hastings Goldney esq. Mrs. Herries, Herbert John Butler Hollings J.P. Walter James Burrell esq. and Edward Pain esq. and George James Murray esq. J.P. The Heatherside nurseries here have a fine avenue a mile and a half in length of gigantic Wellingtonias and a collection of conifers of great size. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are rye, wheat, oats and barley. The area of the parish is 7,602 acres of land and 72 of water; rateable value, £15,398; the population in 1881 was-of the hamlet, 4,012 and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,608.

The Frimley Parochial Committee of the Rural Sanitary Authority of the Farnham union consists of 12 members; chairman, A. Pain esq.; clerk, William Whiteley.

Royal Albert Orphan Asylum.

The Royal Albert Orphan Asylum, established in 1864 & situated at the northern part of the parish, is a brick building, with a stuccoed front: surrounded by about 200 acres of land, 50 of which are used as a farm: the children admitted are elected by subscribers only & must be orphans; boys are eligible for admission between the ages of 8.& 12 years & leave the institution at 14; girls are admitted between the same ages, but remain until 15: there are now about 200 inmates; besides farming, the boys are taught useful trades, & the girls are taught housework: a dining hall has been erected, adjoining the main building: the foundation stone was laid by Her Majesty, who is patroness of the institution.

National School, built in 1867, for 180 children; average attendance, 160.
