Historical Description

HAMBLEDON is a parish and small village, giving name to a union, 4 miles south from Godalming, 38 from London, 8 south from Guildford and 1 ½ north-east from the Witley station, on the London and South Western railway, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Godalming, Guildford petty sessional division, county court district of Guildford and Godalming, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Peter is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: it was rebuilt in 1846, and has 160 sittings. The register dates from the year 1617. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £196, with residence and 43 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Radnor, and held since 1876 By the Rev. Richard Phillips. Frederick and Robert E. Mellersh esqrs. are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is a light loam; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas, mangolds and turnips. The area is 1,585 acres; rateable value, £2,462; and the parish contained in 1881 a population of 542, including 103 inmates of the union house.

HAMBLEDON UNION

Board day, alternate Thursdays, at the Workhouse at 1 p.m. The Union comprises 16 parishes, viz: Alfold, Bramley, Chiddingfold, Cranleigh, Dunsfold, Elstead, Ewhurst, Hambledon, Hascombe, Haslemere, Peper-Harow, St. Marthar-on-the-Hill, Shalford, Thursley, Witley & Wonersh. The population of the union in 1881 was 16,353; rateable value, £104,940.

The Workhouse, situated near the road to Chichester, at the extremity of this parish, was erected in 1786, for 265 inmates.
