Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HASCOMBE is a parish and village, 4 miles south-east from Godalming, 8 south from Guildford, 4 ½ west from Cranleigh station on the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, and 37 from London, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, Guildford petty sessional division, Hambledon union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Peter is a small edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, a private chapel belonging to Joseph Godman esq. south porch and a western tower with shingled spire containing 5 bells: the stained west window was placed by Sir Henry E. Austen, of Shalford, to the memory of the Rev. Conyers Middleton D.D. author of the “Life of Cicero,” and other works, who was rector of this parish and died 28th July, 1750: there is also a memorial window to Joseph Godman esq. who died in 1874, and thirteen stained lancet windows: in the chancel, which is divided from the nave by a carved oak screen of the 15th century, are sedilia and a piscina: a similar screen separates the nave from the Godman chapel, and there is a monument to William Diddlesfold of Chiddingfold, 1789: the church was rebuilt in 1864, from designs by Henry Woodyer esq. of Grafham Grange, at a cost of about £3,000; and the chancel has recently (1890) been highly decorated, the walls and splays of the windows representing throughout scenes from Holy Scripture: there is also a beautifully painted reredos: there are 200 sittings, nearly all being free: The register dates from the year 1646.

The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £207, net income £316, with glebe and residence, in the gift of E. Thompson esq. and held since 1862 by the Rev.
