Historical Description

HEADLEY is a scattered village and parish, 4 ½ miles south from Epsom, 3 south-east from Leatherhead, 2 north from Betchworth station on the South Eastern railway, in the Mid division of the county, Copthorne hundred, Epsom petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Leatherhead rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with spire, containing 8 bells and a striking clock and chiming apparatus, the gift of the Hon. Mrs. Howard: the church was rebuilt in 1855 and the tower erected in 1858—9: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £170, net income £122, with residence and 15 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of Henry Thompson esq. and held since 1883 by the Rev. Lawrence John Chamberlen M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The charities are £31 yearly, for bread and coals, £30 being derived from a charity left in 1626 by Henry Smith, of London, and £1 as a perpetual charge on part of the estate of the late George Lyall esq. Headley Grove is the seat of Sir John Bridge J.P. and Headley Park of Mrs. Lyall. The Hon. H. Dudley Ryder is lord of the manor. Mrs. Lyall, Sir John Bridge J.P. Winthrop Mackworth Praed and Roger Cunliffe esqs. are the chief landowners. The soil is mainly a loamy sand, with a band of clay running through; subsoil, stone, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,066 acres; rateable value, £2,586; the population in 1881 was 339.

Hurst Farm, half-a-mile north-east, is partly in this and partly in the adjoining parish of Walton-on-the-Hill.
