Historical Description

HORLEY is a village and parish, situated on the river Mole, with a station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 25 ½ miles from London, 5 south-by-east from Reigate and 5 south from Redhill, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, and in Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The village is lighted with gas by the Horley District Gas Company Limited, from works erected in 1886, and which also have powers to supply Nutfield, Charlwood, Newdigate, Burstow, Horne, Upper Beeding, Ifield, Rusper, Crawley and Worth. The church of St. Bartholomew is a building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, with south chapel, nave of four bays, north aisle, north and west porches, and a tower of wood with spire, containing a clock and 8 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1882 under the direction of Sir A. W. Blomfield kt. M.A., A.R.A, F.S.A, at a cost of £5,000, when the roofs were renewed, the interior refitted, and the galleries removed: the west window was the gift of John Maple esq. of Petridge Wood, in memory of his son; the re-table and litany Stool were given by the Rev. Canon Bridges, rector of Beddington, and the cover for the communion table by Mr. Maple: the brass lectern was the gift of Mr. J. Rice in memory of his father, the Rev, Edward Rice D.D. vicar of this parish from 1834 to 1853: the handsome reredos was presented by Mr. E. W. Shove in memory of his ancestors: the church was re-opened March 9th, 1882, by the Bishop of Rochester, and has 430 sittings, of which about one-third are free. The register dates from the year 1531. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £250 with a glebe house, in the gift of Christ’s Hospital, and held since 1890 by Rev. Renry Thomas Lewis M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Christ Church Mission church at Salfords was built in 1881 at a cost of £500, and will seat 150 persons: the Rev. William Hurst T.A.K.C.L. is curate in charge; Mr. John Trevarthen, licensed lay preacher. There are also Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. A charity of £44 average annual value, left by Henry Smith esq. alderman of London, who died at Wandsworth, January 30th, 1628, is for clothing and £1 is distributed in money to widows. The Governors of Christ’s Hospital, who are lords of the manor, John Maple, Edward Brocklehurst J.P. and Samuel John Knight esqs. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, in part light with subsoil of gravel, and in other parts subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, grass and roots. The area is 7,320 acres; rateable value, £36,994; the population in 1881 was 2,385. A flower show is held here annually.
