Historical Description

HORNE (or Hoorn) is a village and parish, 3 miles south-west from Godstone station on the South Eastern railway, 2 ½ north-east from Horley station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 7 south-east from Reigate and 25 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Godstone petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, rural deanery of Godstone, archdeaconry of Kingston and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch, and a western tower with shingled spire containing 3 bells: the church was completely restored in 1880 and enlarged by the addition of a south aisle, organ chamber and vestry, at a cost of £2,000 and has 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £485, net income £385, in the gift of Mrs. Gill, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Isaac Ormsby Powell M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who resides at Marie Hill, Blindley Heath. Charities amounting to an annual value of £43 given by deed by Henry Smith esq. alderman of London, who died at Wandsworth, January 30th, 1628, are for clothing; £1 in money is also distributed among widows. The principal landowners are George Palmer esq. who is lord of the manor, and Jesus College, Cambridge. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,548 acres of land and 46 water; rateable value £3,704; the population in 1881 was 698.
