Historical Description

HORSELL is a parish and village, 25 ¼ miles from London, 15 ½ south-west from Kingston, 6 south from Chertsey and 1 mile north from Woking station; it is in the North Western division of the county, Godley hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester; it is one of the ancient parochial members of Woking. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone, erected in the time of Edward the First (1272—1307) and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle with an arcade of three Pointed arches, resting on octagonal piers, and an embattled western tower, containing 6 bells and a clock with 2 dials, which strikes the hours and quarters, presented by J. H. Stanton esq.: in the church are several brasses and also two monuments, one to James Fenn esq. and the other to Sir John William Rose: the interior was restored in 1871 and the tower in 1884—5 at a cost of £1,250, raised by voluntary contributions, and is now (June 1890) being again restored at a cost of £3,500, the work including a new bay on the south side and the lengthening of the church, the thorough renovation and re-tiling of the roof, the insertion of additional windows in the north and south walls, the reflooring of the nave and aisle and the reseating of some parts of the church; the cost of rebuilding of the chancel and the erection of new vestries will be defrayed by the Rev. John Back M.A. of Church Hill. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £16, net income £215, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Back M.A. vicar here, 1878—84, and held since 1884 by the Rev. William Honey Turle M.A. of New College, Oxford. The charities are, £5 17s. for bread, given by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30th, 1628; Hammond’s of £5 15s. given in money; and Clarke’s, of £4 2s. for clothing. This parish contains some good nursery grounds, particularly those of Mr. Anthony Waterer, for American plants, the cultivation of which has here been made a speciality: the grounds exceed 200 acres in extent and are in a high state of cultivation. A vegetable and flower show, for the cottagers of the parish, is held annually in July. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Anthony Waterer, Richard Brettell, Edward Roake, Henry Herbert Hammond, Lawrence James Baker arid John Stedman esqrs. The National Liberal Land Co. the Countess de Morrella and the Rev. John Back M.A. The soil is sandy; subsoil, loamy. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas and beans. The area is 2,930 acres; rateable value, £5,653; the population in 1881 was 900.

National School (mixed), built in 1851 & enlarged in 1882 for 240 children; average attendance, 145; a good playground of 1 ½ acres was given to the school by the Rev. John Back in 1883.
