Historical Description

KINGSWOOD is a liberty detached from Ewell parish, and, with a portion of Banstead, was formed into an ecclesiastical parish 11 September, 1838, 3 ½ miles north-west from Reigate, 3 south from Banstead station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 17 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, rural deanery of Reigate, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Andrew, erected in lieu of the old one by the late Thomas Alcock esq. at a cost of £10,000, is a cruciform structure of flint and Caen stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled central tower, with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are 225 sittings; a lych-gate forms the entrance to the churchyard The register dates from the year 1836. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, with 31 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Henry Cosmo Orme Bonsor esq. M.P., and held since 1876 by the Rev. Frederick Taunton M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The old church is still utilized as a mission room and for charitable purposes. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built by the late Mr. H. Fowkes. Kingswood Warren, a quarter of a mile east of the church, is the seat of Henry Cosmo Orme Bonsor esq. M.P. The soil is principally clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of the liberty is 1,821 acres; rateable value, £3,108; the population in 1881 of the liberty was 387, and of the ecclesiastical parish 957.

Board School (mixed), under the Banstead & Kingswood school board, built in 1875, for 220 children; average attendance, 150.

The Board meetings for the united school district are held monthly at the school, Banstead; the chairman of the board is Frederick Alderton, of the Middlesex asylum, Banstead, & the clerk is John G. Morten, jun. solicitor, Larches, Banstead; Henry King, Tadworth, attendance officer.
