Historical Description
Leatherhead is about two miles and a half from Mickleham, and five from Dorking. Here is a bridge over the Mole, which having sunk into the earth near Mickleham, at the foot of Box Hill, rises again near this place, which is pleasantly situated on a rising bank by the side of the river, and has a fine, dry, champaign country almost all round it. Its bridge is built with bricks, consisting of fourteen arches, and received great additions and repairs in the year 1783.
The Church is built in the form of a cross, consisting of a chancel, six aisles, and vestry room.
Leatherhead had formerly a market.
Near Leatherhead Common, to the west, is a place called Stoke Dabernon; it derives its name from the Dabernons, an ancient and illustrious family, which ended in a female heir, in the reign of Edward III. From them it descended through a female heir to Lord Bray, and from thence to the Vincents.
LEATHERHEAD is a parish and railway station, and formerly a market town, situated on the river Mole, which is here crossed by a brick bridge of 14 arches, 18 miles from London, 4 south-west from Epsom and 5 north from Dorking, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Copthorne, petty sessional division of Epsom, union and county court district, Leatherhead rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The London and South Western railway company have a branch line from Wimbledon to this town, which was carried to Guildford in 1887, and the London, Brighton and South Coast railway runs through Dorking and Horsham. The town is paved, and lighted with gas by a company, formed in 1850, and is supplied with water from works situated at Fetcham, the property of a company, formed in 1884. The church of SS. Mary and Nicholas, situated on an eminence, is a cruciform structure of flint, with stone facings, erected in the 12th century and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, north porch and an embattled western tower with octagonal turret, containing a clock and 10 bells: there is beautiful monument to Ellen, daughter of William Richardson esq. and wife of Col. Dixon; there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1656. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £218, net income £302, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Frank Ernest Utterton M.A. of New College, Oxford, and hon. canon of Winchester. There are Baptist, Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. Brewing and brick and tile works are carried on here. The charities amount to nearly £300 yearly. Randalls Park is the seat of John Henderson esq. B.A. who is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Roger Cunliffe esq. J.P. of Tyrrell’s woods, Mrs. F. C. Bryant, of Woodlands Park, Mrs. Sackville Davis, of the Grange, Abraham Dixon esq. J.P. of Cherkley Court, Merton College, Oxford, and John Henderson esq. who is lord of the manor. The soil is marl; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,541 acres; rateable value, £23,000; the population in 1871 was 2,455 and in 1881 was 3,329 and now (1890) about 4,000.

St. John’s or Foundation, first established at Clapton in 1852, was transferred hither in 1872; the buildings, erected in 1873, & now (1890) in course of enlargement to hold 260 boys, are of brick, with stone dressings, in the Tudor style: this school is for the free boardings & education of sons of clergymen of the Church of England & is supported by voluntary contributions.
National, Church hill, built in 1837, & since enlarged for 300 boys; average attendance, 320.
A girls’ school in connection with the boys’ National school was erected in 1883, for 300 children; the average attendance is 142.
