Historical Description

LEIGH is a village and parish, situated on the river Mole, 3 miles south-west from Reigate and 26 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Bartholomew the Great is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style and consists of a chancel, nave, south and west porches and a western tower with spire containing 6 bells; on the floor of the chancel are several slabs and brasses to the Arderne family, who were owners of Leigh Place, now a farm house: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1579. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £24, gross yearly value £150, with residence and 28 acres of glebe, in the gift of Mr. and Mrs. John Watney, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Clement Lucas. A charity of £30 yearly, left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died Jan. 28th, 1628, is for clothing and blankets. Mynthurst, the residence of James Wilson esq. is pleasantly situated one mile south-east. The principal landowners are Mrs. John Watney, the Duke of Norfolk K.G. who is lord of the manor, Charles Kaye Freshfield esq. W. D. Freshfield esq. H. R. Freshfield esq. J. Dymond esq. J. Clutton esq. Sir Trevor Lawrence bart, M.P. and A. and E. Chamngton esqs. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,418 acres; rateable value, £3,469; the population in 1881, was 523.
