Historical Description

LIMPSFIELD, situated on the Kentish border, is a large village and parish, 4 ½ miles north-east from Godstone, one mile from Oxted, and 3 miles from Westerham stations, in the South Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Godstone union and petty sessional division, Godstone rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch and a tower on the south side with square broach spire and containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was restored in 1871, at a cost of upwards of £2,000: the organ was given by Arthut Leveson-Gower esq, and several stained windows have since been added: there is a beautiful marble monument by Noble to the late Lord Elphinstone: there are 325 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £619, net yearly value £330, with residence and 29 acres of glebe, in the gift of Granville W. G. Leveson-Gower esq. and held since 1870 by the Rev. Edward Rhys Jones M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, formerly fellow of that College, hon. canon of Rochester, and examining chaplain to the Bishop of Rochester. There is a Baptist chapel on the common. A Home for the Children of the Missionaries of the Church Missionary Society has been erected at a cost of about £35,000; there is a Convalescent Home on the edge of the common for women and children, and in the village a Home for Boys in connection with the Oxford Missions in the East of London: charities of about £4 yearly are distributed to the aged poor in food and clothing. G. W. G. Leveson-Gower esq. who is lord of the manor. Colonel Goldsworthy and Mrs. Teulon are the principal landowners. The soil is principally sand and clay. The principal crops are wheat, oats, barley, roots and a few hops. The area is 4,674 acres; rateable value, £7,152; the population in 1881 was 1,359.
