Historical Description

LONG DITTON is a parish and village, 1 ¼ miles south-west from Kingston; it adjoins Thames Ditton, and is in the Mid division of the county, Kingston hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan police, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Kingston and Rochester diocese. The parish is supplied with gas by the Kingston Gas Company. The Lambeth Water Works are partly in this parish and partly in that of Kingston. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1880, at a cost of £6,400, is a stone building in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, organ chamber, vestry, north porch and a turret over the chancel arch containing 2 bells: there is a brass, removed from the old church, to Sir Richard Castleton kt. ob. 1527: there are eight stained windows, one in the north transept, erected by N. W. Lavers, being a memorial to the Rev. J. T. Liffard, a former rector: there are 428 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £417, net income £300, with 20 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of W. Masterman esq. D.C.L, and others, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Charles Roydon Worsley Hughes B.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The Primitive Methodist Chapel, built in 1875, seat 300 persons. The Mission Hall, erected in 1889, seats 250. Long Ditton Workmen’s Club was established in 1883; president, Gen. Sir Orfeur Cavenagh K.C.S.I. A hospital for infectious diseases was erected at Tolworth in 1889 for the Kingston union; it contains 30 beds. About £30 derived from a charity left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died Jan. 20, 1628, is distributed in clothing. The Earl of Lovelace and the Earl of Egmont are chief landowners: the former is lord of the manor of Long Ditton, and the latter of the manor of Tolworth. The soil is stiff loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 2,089 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £30,985; the population in 1871 was, including Tolworth, 1,836, and in 1881, Long Ditton 1,817, Tolworth 508.
