Historical Description

MALDEN, in Domesday Book styled Maeldune, is a parish on the Hogg’s Mill river, 2 miles south-east from Kingston, in the Mid division of the county, Kingston hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, Beddington rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry, and Rochester diocese. Worcester Park station on the Epsom and Leatherhead branch of the South Western railway is situated here. A large outlying hamlet adjoining Leatherhead common, formed part of this parish until 1884, when it was amalgamated with the contiguous parish of Chessington, in the Epsom union, under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice partly of brick and stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, west porch and a western tower, containing 5 bells: the nave and tower were rebuilt in 1610 and in 1863 the church was re-pewed, the timber roof opened, a chancel arch erected and a new font of Caen stone and Devonshire marble introduced: in 1875 a new and larger nave and chancel were erected on the north side, thus converting the old portion of the building into a south aisle: the site of the former communion table is marked by a stone slab bearing the following inscription:-“Here stood the Lord’s table on Maeldune, the hill of the Cross, for well nigh a thousand years, until the consecration of the new chancel, December 7th, 1875:” the stained east window was the gift of John Hunter esq.; the west window, erected in 1886, was the gift of the parishioners; there are also three other stained windows: the reredos of stone and Venetian mosaic was presented by Mrs. Chetwynd Stapylton: in 1883 a low chancel screen of oak was erected, and the old Jacobean pulpit replaced by one of Caen stone, given by Mrs. Stapylton, mother of the present vicar: in the church are memorials to John Hammet and Elizabeth his wife, both of whom died in 1643; John Goode, ob. 1627; and to Sir Thomas Morley, Clerk-Comptroller of the Board of Green Cloth in the reign of James I. ob, 1693; in the churchyard is the tomb of Catherine, wife of Sir George Walter, of Worcester Park, d. 1733: there are 350 sittings, 294 being free. The register of marriages dates from the year 1676; and of baptisms and burials from 1677. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Chessington annexed, joint average tithe rent-charge £318, net yearly value £168, with residence and 35 acres of glebe, in the gift of Merton College, Oxford, who are the impropriators of the great tithes, and held since 1850 by the Rev. William Chetwynd Stapylton M.A. formerly fellow of that college, hon. canon of Rochester, and surrogate. The poor have £4 7s. 6d. yearly from a charity left in 1626 by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30th, 1628. In 1264 Walter de Merton, thrice Lord High Chancellor of England and afterwards Bishop of Rochester, founded a college here, as expressly stated in the charter of endowment, for the perpetual sustenation of 20 scholars dwelling in the schools of Oxford, or “wheresoever else learning shall happen to flourish;” this endowment was confirmed under royal authority, with considerable amplifications; in 1270, and in 1274 the two former charters were recapitulated and approved by Edward I.: in all these charters there is a unity of purpose and design clearly showing that the foundation at Malden was a house of support and maintenance, but that Oxford was intended to be the place of study, and the college now known as Merton College, but originally dedicated “in honour of God and St. Mary and St. John the Baptist,” was founded about 1266. Malden was the birthplace of Thomas Ravis, Bishop of London (1607—10), and about 1641 of the Rev. Edward Hinton D.D. a distinguished scholar, and master of Witney Grammar School, Oxon. The principal landowners are the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, who own the manor and the great tithes and Thomas Weeding Weeding esq. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, grass &c. The area is 842 acres; rateable value £4,713; the population in 1881 was 525.

National School, built in 1869 & enlarged in 1878—81, for 170 children; number on roll, 160; average attendance, 135.
