Historical Description

MERROW is a small village and parish, pleasantly situated on the road from Guildford to Leatherhead, about 2 miles north-east from Guildford, in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Woking, Guildford petty sessional division and union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. John the Evangelist is a building in the Norman and Later styles, consisting of chancel and nave, aisles, divided from the nave on either side by three circular arches resting on cylindrical piers, north porch, and a massive western tower with shingled spire containing a clock and 3 bells: the east end of the south aisle was formerly the burying-place of the Onslow family: the north porch, and the piers and arches of the south aisle are Norman, the windows contain tracery of the Early English and Decorated styles: the church was rebuilt on the old foundations in 1842, and restored, and a north aisle added in 1881, at a cost of over £1,000, and has 394 sittings, 189 being free. The register dates from the year 1545. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value from tithe rent-charge £250, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Onslow, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Luke Robert Flood M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel and a reading room. The charities amount to £12 yearly for bread. A large portion of this parish consists of open downs, of which “Newland’s corner,” where several roads converge and from which magnificent views are obtainable, and “Fairyland,” are attractive spots. At the time of the Domesday Survey this parish seems to have been part of Stoke, and in the “Testa de Nevil” it appears that some portion of it was royal demesne: the central portion of the village is the property of Miss Thrupp, of Merrow House; the remaining portion belongs to the Earl of Onslow, who is lord of the manor. Merrow Grange is the residence of Lord Algernon Malcolm Arthur Percy M.A., J.P. and Upland is the residence of Col. James Lidderdale. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,592 acres; rateable value, £6,403; the population is about 1,000.
