Historical Description

MERSTHAM is a parish, village and station on the South Eastern railway, 3 ½ miles north-east from Reigate, 8 ¼ south-by-west from Croydon, on the road from the latter to the former place, 22 from Guildford and 18 from London by road, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, rural deanery of Reigate, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Catherine, situated on a knoll at the east end of the village, is an edifice of stone chiefly in the Perpendicular style and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, two chapels, belonging to Lord Hylton’s family, vestry, south porch and a western tower of Early English date, containing a clock and 5 bells; there are monuments to the Jolliffe family and a curious font: the church affords 315 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £471 a year, with residence and 26 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Augustus John Pearman M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. Here is a Baptist chapel. A charity of £22 10s. left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died January 30th, 1628, is for clothing. Here are lime works. At the Feathers Hotel is a well 210 feet deep. Merstham House is the seat of Lord Hylton D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is clay in the lower part of the parish and chalk in the upper part; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 2,593 acres; rateable value, £17,103; the population in 1881 was 903.

A School Board of five members was formed in 1889; Thomas Haben, clerk.
