Historical Description

MICKLEHAM is a parish and pleasant village, situated on the road from Leatherhead to Dorking, with a station called Box Hill and Burford Bridge, 1 ¼ miles south from Mickleham, on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 2 ½ miles north from Dorking and 2 ½ south from Leatherhead, in the Mid division of the county, second division of the hundred of Copthorne, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, Dorking rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church of St. Michael is an ancient fabric of flint and rubble, principally in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, west porch and a low but massive western tower with shingled spire, containing 3 bells and a clock: the church was restored in 1823 at the expense of W. M. Praed esq. and an organ chamber built: the stained east window and the reredos are memorials to John Smith esq. of Mickleham: four stained windows have also been erected to the memory of the late rector: the pulpit is of carved oak: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1549. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £440, with residence, in the gift of R. H. Mackworth Praed esq. and held since 1867 by the Rev. William Henry Harke M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Smith’s charity, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died Jan. 30, 1628, gives a proportion of certain rents, varying from £30 to £32 a year, which is applied by the churchwardens in doles to the poor; and there are several other minor charities.

Box Hill, a hill covered with box trees, is much frequented by picnic parties in the summer. The vale of Mickleham is celebrated for its beauty. Norbury Park, on the west side of the valley, is the seat of Thomas De La Garde Grissell esq. J.P.; the mansion stands on the summit of a lofty eminence, commanding fine prospects, the river Mole meandering through the park. Mickleham Hall is the seat of Gordon Wyatt Clark esq. D.L., J.P. Mickleham Downs is the residence of Robert Herbert Mackworth Praed esq.; Burford Lodge of Sir Trevor Lawrence bart., M.P., J.P. and Juniper Hall, half a mile south, is the seat of George MacAndrew esq. R. H. Mackworth Praed esq. who is lord of the manor, and Thomas De La Garde Grissell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is marl; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,825 acres; rateable value, £9,890; the population in 1881 was 799.
