Historical Description

NEWDIGATE is a parish, 5 ¾ miles south-east from Dorking and 2 ½ south-east from Holmwood station, on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, first division of the hundred of Reigate, but chiefly in the second division of the hundred of Copthorne, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone, principally in the Early English style, a part of the fabric dating from the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, organ chamber, vestry and a western tower with shingled spire, containing a clock and 6 bells; the tower, which is the most interesting feature of the building, is framed in timber throughout, and dates from the 15th century: the main superstructure is carried on four wooden piers 16in. square, and about 11ft. apart; and on the north and south sides are projecting bays of heavy timber work, forming a species of aisle, and serving as buttresses; both have lean-to roofs covered with shingles; in the vestry is an ancient oak chest: in 1877 the church was thoroughly restored and reseated with open benches; the aisles, organ chamber, vestry room and porch being then added, the western gallery removed and a new pulpit and font introduced: there are 258 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £468, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Lancelot Studdert Kennedy M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are several charities, now in the hands of the Charity Commissioners. The Duke of Norfolk K.G. who is lord of the manor, William Farnell-Watson esq. of Henfold, Capel and Henry Fowler Broadwood esq. Lyne, are the principal landowners; there are also several small owners. The soil is chiefly heavy clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,546 acres; rateable value, £3,607; the population in 1881 was 664.

Endowed School (mixed) erected in 1872, for 100 children average attendance, 83; with an endowment of £81 16s. 2d. derived from money left by Messrs. Steere & Booth & invested in Consols.
