Historical Description
Nutfield - In a red sandy common here, there is a metalline kind of substance (that looks like cast iron, and is called ragges) much esteemed hereabouts for paving; and there are several pits from which they dig fuller’s earth.
In ploughing through a sandy hillock, in a field in this parish, in 1755, was found, an earthen vessel, containing near 900 coins of the lower empire.
NUTFIELD is a parish situated on the road from Redhill to Godstone, with a station 1 mile south from the village on the South Eastern railway, 3 ½ miles east from Reigate and 23 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and unions Redhill and Reigate county court district, and in Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Peter and St. Paul, situated on a slope to the north of Upper Nutfield, is in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, of rubble and brick, faced, including the tower, with rough cast concrete, consisting of chancel, with vestry and organ chamber on the north, nave of three bays, aisles, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with short octagonal shingled spire and containing 6 bells: the base of the tower forms the western entrance and on the south-west buttress are incised the named William Gawton, of London, Thomas Bristo, Henry, William and John Best,” and the date “1594:” the chancel has on the south side a piscina with shelf and an Easter sepulchre, within which is a low tomb bearing the following marginal inscription in Norman French, in Lombardic characters now imperfect:-”SIRE THOMAS DE ROLDHAM GIST ICI DEV DE SA ALME EYT MERCI:” on the same Bide, now affixed to a new stone slab, are brass effigies of a man and woman, with two shields and an inscription to William Grayston” quo’dam cler’i huj’ eccl’iae,” and Joan his wife, c. 1465: on the north side is an aumbry, the door of which is formed by a modern brass: the reredos, a handsome work in oak, elaborately carved, has a groined projecting canopy, supported in front by detached pinnacled buttresses enriched with crocketed niches, containing figures of apostles t a fine Perpendicular screen of carved oak, with elegant open tracery and cresting, divides the nave and chancel: the oak pulpit, of the late Tudor period, is panelled and relieved with flowing design and foliage: the font is octagonal and the sides of the basin are panelled in quartrefoils; on the stem is incised:-“H. H.; T. W.; 1665;” at the east end of the south aisle are two arched recesses and above one a brass of the 17th century to Edmund Molyneux, with an admonitory inscription: on the east wall of the aisle, below a stained window, are brasses with coronet and crest to Ellen (Power), widow of John Home Purves esq. and 2nd wife of Charles (Manners-Sutton), 1st Viscount Canterbury, who died November 16; 1845, and to her daughter Marguerite (Purves ), wife of Capt. William Augustus Tollemache; here also is another brass, shaped like a “fret” (the arms of the Tollemache family), and inscribed to Lady Elizabeth Tollemache Powerscotirfr, d. 17th August, 1780; there are three other stained windows; one in the north aisle has a few fragments of ancient glass: under the tower is a plain panelled oak chest, and on the gable of the south transept is a sundial: the church was restored and enlarged in 1882 at a cost of £3,400, when the chancel was redecorated, the expense being defrayed by J. T. Charlesworth esq.; there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £587, net yearly value £500, including 105 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Jesus College, Orford, and held since 1882 by the Rev. William Kyffin Bostock Briscoe M. A. late fellow, vice principal and tutor of that college A charity of £33 yearly, left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30th, 1628, is for clothing and coals. This place is noted for its production of fullers’ earth, an earthy hydrous silicate of alumina, With great capacity for absorbing grease and largely used in preparing woollen and worsted cloths and also for chemical and toilet purposes and obtained from two pits belonging to the Fullers’ Earth Union Limited; the only other county in England in which this material is found is Somerset; the mineral known as sulphate of barytes also occurs here. In 1755 an earthen vessel, containing 900 Roman coins, was found in this parish. Nutfield Priory is the seat of Mrs. Fielden. John Newton esq. is lord of the manors The principal landowners are the trustees of Joshua Fielden esq. L. M. Rate, Percy Pelly, Jesse Thomas Charlesworth, Tom Nickalls, Charles Maw and James Hudson esqrs. Sir Henry Edwards Kt. D.L; J.P. Miss Clement and Miss Kenrick. The soil is loam; subsoil, fullers’ earth, clay and ironstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,401 acres; rateable value, £12,646; the population in 1881 was 1,093.
