Historical Description

Ockham, the seat of Lord King: this, according to Camden, was the native place of William Ockham, though by some supposed of Ireland. He was a celebrated philosopher, and a scholar of Duns Scotus, whose principles he controverted. Having incurred the Pope’s censure, by pleading for the poverty of the clergy, he renounced his allegiance to him, and asserted the independence of all upon him in temporals, with such powerful arguments, that he obtained from the Pope the name of the Invincible Doctor. He died in Germany, in 1347, leaving many polemical tracts behind him, of which a few have been published.

In the church-yard is a tomb erected over a grave, in which is deposited the corpse of a carpenter of this place, with the following epitaph upon the tomb-stone.

"John Spong, died November 17, 1736;

Who many a sturdy oak has laid along,

Fell’d by Death’s surer hatchet, here lies Spong. Posts of the made, yet ne’er a place could get, And liv’d by railing, tho’ he was no wit.

Old saws he had, altho’ no antiquarian,

And stiles corrected, yet was no grammarian.

Long liv’d he Ockham’s premier architect,

And lasting as his fame, a tomb to erect,

In vain we seek an artist such as he,

Whose pales and gates were for eternity;

So here he rests from all life’s toils and follies,

Oh! spare, kind Heaven, his fellow-lab’rer Hollies."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

OCKHAM is a village and parish situated near the river Wey, 7 miles north-east from Guildford, 4 ½ south from Weybridge station, 2 ½ miles north from Horsley station on the Surbiton and Guildford branch of the South Western railway and 20 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Woking hundred, Guildford petty sessional division and union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of All Saints is an edifice of flint and rubble, and comprises portions of various styles from the Norman period to the 15th century: it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle with an attached chapel, north porch, and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window of the chancel comprises seven lancet lights: the church was thoroughly restored and enlarged by lengthening the aisle in 1875, when the east window was filled with stained glass: there are 200 sittings, allotted from year to year, or as determined by the churchwardens: in a mausoleum in the churchyard is a sitting statue, in white marble, by John Michael Rysbrack, of Peter King, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and Lord Chancellor, elevated to the peerage 29th May, 1725, by the titles of Baron King and Baron Ockham, ob. July, 1734. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £257, net income £439, including 96 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lovelace, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Seymour Neville M.A. late Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Smith’s charity of £5 17s. left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, is by the churchwardens distributed in calico, flannel &c. Charcoal burning is carried on here. The manor belongs to the Earl of Lovelace, who is also the principal landowner. Ockham gives the courtesy title of Viscount to the eldest son of the Earl of Lovelace, but the present Viscount, having succeeded (1st September, 1862) to his mother’s barony of Wentworth, sits in the House of Lords as Lord Wentworth. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley and root crops. The area is 2,756 acres of land; rateable value, £3,245; the population in 1881 was 541. A detached part of this parish was known as Ockham glebe, or Pitland’s farm, situate 11 miles from Ockham, locally in the parish of Abinger: this being glebe has been sold, and is now included in the district of Holmesbury St. Mary.

National Schools (mixed), built for 100 children; average attendance, 62.
