The London, Brighton and South Coast railway passes through this parish, in which there is a station, called the Ockley and Capel station. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient structure, in the Early Decorated style of the 14th century, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled tower at the west end containing 6 bells: the church was entirely restored and a north aisle added in 1873 at a cost of upwards of £2,000, by Col. Calvert, of Ockley Court and Charles Calvert esq. who also presented a fine stained window and an altar piece of glass mosaic; there are other stained windows and an organ, presented by Mrs. Leicester Hibbert: the church affords 300 sittings, 60 being free. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £230, with a glebe house and land, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Clare College, Cambridge, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Francis Peter Du Sautoy B.D. formerly fellow of that college. The church of St. John, on Ockley green, is a modern structure, built mainly at the cost of the Rev. F. P. Du Sautoy M.A. rector, for the convenience of the inhabitants of the south part of the parish; it was consecrated by Bishop Wilberforce, December 5th, 1872, and consists of chancel, nave, north porch, and a western turret containing one bell: some of the windows are stained, and there are 200 sittings. Smith’s charity of £45 yearly, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, is for clothing. The trustees of the late Lee Steere esq. are lords of the manor. Col. Calvert and W. C. Cazalet esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, weald clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 3,992 acres; rateable value, £4,468; the population in 1881 was 623. Walliswood, 2 ¼ miles south-west, and May’s Green, 2 ½ miles south-west, are villages partly in this parish and partly in Abinger.
