Historical Description

OXTED is a parish and village with a station on the Croydon and East Grinstead line of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 3 miles east from Godstone, 4 ½ from Reigate, in the South Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Godstone petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Godstone rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of the Virgin Mary is a building of stone in the Decorated style, with traces of Early English work, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 5 bells: an the chancel are three brasses of the 15th century: there is a memorial window erected, at a cost of £150, to the late C. Hoskins Master esq.: the reredos of glass mosaic, representing “The Last Supper,” was placed at a cost of £120: in the vestry is an ancient iron box with a very curious lock, which entirely covers the lid and has 13 bolts: the interior of the church was thoroughly restored in 1877 and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £616, net income £381, with residence and 35 acres of glebe, in the gift of Charles Hoskins Master esq. and held since 1869 by the Rev. Frank Parnell M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. Here is a Baptist chapel. There are charities of £52 annual value, principally derived from a devise by will, dated April 24th, 1627, by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London and consisting of a farm at Worth, in Sussex; these charities are distributed in clothing and money and bread. The Oxted Institute and Reading Rooms possesses a library of upwards of 500 volumes; Rev. Frank Parnell M.A. president. Charles Hoskins Master esq. J.P. and Edward Kelsey esq. are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Earl of Cottenham, Charles Hoskins Master esq. George Barker esq. the Rev. Charles Maunoir M‘Niven M.A. of Perrysfield, G. W. Leveson-Gower esq. and Herbert Hollamby Young esq. The chief part of the inhabitants are employed in agriculture. The soil is chalk, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, grass, roots and hops. The parish contains 3,644 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £8,117; the population in 1881 was 1,727.
