Historical Description
PETERSHAM (so named from having belonged to the Abbey of St. Peter, at Chettsey) is a village and parish, situated on the banks of the Thames, adjoining Richmond, in the Kingston division of the county. Kingston hundred, Richmond petty sessional division and union, Wandsworth county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The village, consisting mainly of fine old houses, is beautifully secluded and screened from the north and east winds by Richmond Hill. This place confers the title of Viscount on the Stanhopes, Earls of Harrington; the title of Baron Petersham was formerly held by John (Maitland), Duke of Lauderdale; but became extinct on his death in 1682. The village is lighted with gas by the Richmond Gas Company, and supplied with water by the Southwark and Vauxhall Water Company. The church of St. Peter, situated between the road to Richmond and the river, and erected in 1505, is a Small building, repaired at various times, and is now chiefly of red brick, in mixed styles, principally Late Italian, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower with porch on the north side, surmounted by a large hexagonal open turret with cupola and containing 2 bells. In the church are many monuments, including a tablet erected by the Hudson’s Bay Company to Captain George Vancouver R.N. a distinguished maritime discoverer, after whom “Vancouver’s Island” was named; he died 10th May, 1798: on the north side of the chancel, within an arched recess, flanked by Corinthian columns, is a tomb with recumbent effigies to George Cole esq. of the Middle Temple, ob. 1624, and Frances, his wife, ob. 1633: there are other memorials to Vice-Admiral Sir George Scott, of Gala, d. 1841; Sir Thomas Jenner, serjeant-at-law, d. 1706; and Lady Frances Caroline Douglas, d. 25 Oct. 1827: the churchyard abounds in curious epitaphs, those to Sir G. Scott, d. 1848; Patty Bean, d. 1715; and the Misses Mary and Agnes Berry, Walpole’s friends, both of whom died in 1852, being especially noticeable; Elizabeth (Murray), Duchess of Lauderdale, who died 24 Aug. 1697, wife, first of Sir Lionel Tollemache, Countess of Dysart in her own right, and secondly wife of John, Duke of Lauderdale K.G. is buried here, as well as Sir Charles Stuart, governor of Minorca, d. 25 March, 1801, and Louisa (Bertie), his wife: in the churchyard is also the tomb of Richard, second Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, d. 26 Sept. 1839, and here was buried Mortimer Collins, poet and novelist, d. 28 July, 1876: there are 362 sittings, 300 being free. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Kew, joint gross yearly value £520, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Henry Bliss M.A., Mus. Bac. of Exeter College, Oxford, who resides at Kew. A cemetery of one acre was formed as an addition to the churchyard in 1870 at a cost of £240, and is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. Almshouses for six aged persons of the parish were rebuilt in 1867, at the cost of an unknown benefactor. Ham House, the Seat of the Earl of Dysart, situated on low ground near the banks of the Thames, is a large mansion of red brick, with short projecting semi-hexagonal wings, and has two fronts, the principal front facing the river displaying a series of leaden busts, placed within arches in the brickwork; the grounds, extending to a gravelled terrace with iron gates, include a wide lawn and fine shrubberies: in the centre of the lawn, on a rock-like pedestal raised on steps, is a colossal semi-recumbent figure of stone, emblematical of the river Thames: the house was originally built by Sir Thomas Vavasour, Marshal of the Household of James I. and appears to have been finished in 1610, since this date, with the words “Vivat Rex” appear on the principal door; it afterwards came into the possession of the Tollemache family, and on the death of Sir Lionel Tollemache, in 1668, it was greatly altered and enlarged by his widow Elizabeth, Countess of Dysart, and eventually wife of John, Duke of Lauderdale K.G.: the interior contains a spacious hall, surrounded by a gallery, hung with portraits, and adjoining the hall is a small chapel, while various doors open into suites of apartments, with ceilings painted by Antonio Verrio, fanciful tapestry, and rare furniture and china, and in one cabinet is a crystal locket, containing the hair of the Earl of Essex, Queen Elizabeth’s hapless favourite: on the west side of the house is a gallery, 92 feet in length, hung with family portraits and other pictures: in this house the members of the notorious “Cabal” ministry of Charles II.’s reign held their meetings; the house contains a library comprising some rare and valuable books, among which are 12 Caxtons, one of them unique; there are also many valuable portraits and paintings, in excellent preservation, representing characters of note and various ancestors of the present family: John, second Duke of Argyll, was born here in 1678: James II. was ordered to retire here before he abdicated: the manor belonged to Chertsey Abbey, and afterwards successively to many royal and noble persons, including Anne of Cleves, Henry, Prince of Wales, Charles, Duke of York (afterwards Charles I.) and the Duke of Lauderdale. Douglas House is the residence of Charles Stirling-Home-Drummond-Moray esq. The principal landowners are the Earl of Dysart, who is lord of the manor, and the Crown. The soil is gravel and sand; subsoil, sand, chiefly in grass cultivation. The area is 651 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £8,688; the population in 1881 was 566.
British Schools (mixed & infants), built, with master’s, residence, in 1851, by Lord John (subsequently Earl) Russell, at a cost of £1,500; the mixed school will hold 94 children; average attendance, 93 & the infants’ school, 53; average attendance, 50.
