Historical Description

PIRBRIGHT is a parish and village, 5 ½ miles north-west from Guildford, 5 north-east from Aldershot north camp, 6 west from Woking, 1 mile south-west from Brook-wood station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Woking hundred, Guildford petty sessional division and union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, Woking rural deanery, West Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church of St. Michael and all Angels, erected on the site of the ancient building, burnt down in 1784, is an edifice of brick in the late Perpendicular style, with a tower of Pirbright stone, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with small spire, containing 6 bells and a clock, placed in 1887: the east window is stained; there are 170 sittings, all being free. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £144 with, residence, in the gift of Henry Joseph Tennison Halsey esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. James Worthington Dunn B.A. of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel. Smith’s charity of about £6, left by Henry Smith of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, who died January 30th, 1628, his will being dated April 24th, 1627, is for provisions. Poulton’s charity of about £6, was left by George Poulton, of Pirbright, to purchase warm clothing which is annually distributed on Christmas Eve to men and women over 60 years of age. Henry Joseph Tennison Halsey esq. is chief landowner and lord of the manor. The extensive common lands, with the exception of that part lying immediately in the centre of the village, and all manorial rights attached, have been purchased by the War, Department, and is used in part as a site for the encampment of the brigade of Foot Guards, who are here instructed in musketry, for which butts have been constructed. Immediately adjoining, at Bisley, is the new camp ground of the National Rifle Association, transferred from Wimbledon in 1890. The soil is chiefly sand; subsoil, partly loam and partly sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, rye and beans. The area is 10,569 acres, of which 3,070 belong to the War Department, rateable value £10,127; the population in 1881 was 723.

A. School Board of 5 members was formed in April 1885; clerk, Gilbert White, Guildford; attendance officer, Daniel Boulter, Pirbright.
