Historical Description
The hamlet of Roehampton, in the month of October, 1780, suffered very great damage from a violent hurricane; upon the premises of Lewis Brown, a gardener, situated near a lane leading to Barnes Common, its devastations were particularly great. The upper part of a gable end of the dwelling-house was forced out, and formed a considerable chasm in the room where his daughter, who had been brought to bed but a few hours before, lay. The chimney was also thrown down, but the bricks providentially falling on the outside, the woman escaped without injury. The barn and other outbuildings were levelled with the ground; the materials dispersed, and some of them carried to a very great distance. The body of a large empty cart, which stood in the yard, was torn from the carriage, and removed to the distance of 90 paces. Of seven persons who took shelter in the barn, one only was killed upon the spot; another died in consequence of the bruises he received. A walnut-tree, 12 feet in circumference, which grew upon Lady Eggleton’s premises, was torn up by the roots, and carried to the distance of 22 feet. In Roehampton, and the adjacent fields, above 130 large trees, from 18 inches to four feet diameter, were thrown down within the space of three quarters of a mile. The trees fell across the lane, towards the north and north-west, so that the road was rendered impassable for several weeks. Some of the trees were removed to a considerable distance, one in particular, being about 40 feet in length, and by computation nearly two tons in weight, is said to have been carried by the wind to the north side of the road upon Barnes Common, above 130 yards from the spot where it grew. The effects of this hurricane were visible for a space upwards of three miles in length, beginning at Lord Besborough’s, at Roehampton, and ending at Hammersmith, where the church received considerable injury'. The greatest breadth was not more than 200 yards.
ROEHAMPTON is a hamlet and ecclesiastical parish, formed November 25, 1845, from the civil parish of Putney, near Richmond park, 6 ½ miles from Hyde Park corner and 1 from Barnes common, in the South Western Metropolitan postal district, North Eastern division of the county, Kingston hundred, Wandsworth union and county court district, and parliamentary borough formed by the “Redistribution of Seats Act, 1885,” and in the rural deanery of Barnes, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester, and has several good mansions commanding fine views. In the time of Henry VII. it consisted of fourteen houses. The nearest railway stations are at Barnes and Putney on the London and South Western railway, Putney being the more generally convenient. The district church of Holy Trinity, situated in Roehampton lane, and erected in 1842 by voluntary contributions, is a cruciform building in the Decorated style from designs by Mr. Benjamin Ferrey, architect, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and bell-cot containing one bell: the church was enlarged in 1862, and in 1883—4 new vestries and an organ chamber were built; adjoining is a large mausoleum in the Classic style, erected by the Lyne-Stephens family, and consecrated in 1864. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £420, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1872 by the Rev, Robert Carrington M.A., of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. St. Joseph’s Catholic church was erected in 1881, and is served by the Jesuit fathers of Manresa House. Manresa House, a Jesuit College, is in Roehampton lane; attached to it is the church of St. Stanislaus, opened in 1865; Rev. Francis Scoles, rector. The Hambro’ Orphanage was established in 1880, for the reception of 16 girls, who are maintained, educated and trained for domestic service; the cost for each girl is £12 yearly; the building has since been enlarged and now maintains 27 girls. A parochial coal and clothing club was formed in 1869. The Workmen’s Club and Reading Room in Treville street, was established in 1861, and has a library of about 2,000 volumes and a billiard room. Roehampton House, the seat of the Earl of Leven and Melville, is a substantial mansion of red brick, erected in 1712, from the designs of Thomas Archer; the ceiling of the drawing-room was painted by Sir James Thornhill. The principal landowners are Mrs. Lyne Stephens, Upper Grove house; the Earl of Leven and Melville; William Clarke esq. The Rookery; David Barclay Chapman esq. Downshire house; H. R. H.
