Historical Description
SANDERSTEAD is a parish and village, 3 miles south from Croydon, 2 miles east-by-south from Purley station on the South Eastern railway, 1 ¼ from Sanderstead station and 13 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wallington hundred, Croydon petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Beddington, archdeaconry of Kingston-on-Thames and diocese of Rochester. The church of All Saints is a small edifice of flint and stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with spire, containing a clock and 2 bells: it was restored in 1846 and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £364, net £250, with residence and 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of Captain Frank Wigsell Arkwright, and held since 1881 by the Rev. James Stephen Hodson D.D. of Merton College, Oxford, F.R.S.E. The poor have £1 15s. 6d. yearly from a charity left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London (died January 30, 1628), by will dated April 24, 1627, for bread, and £5 in money from Mellish’s charity: there is also a bequest of £30 for coal and clothing left by John Henry Smith by will in 1887. At Purley Bury, one mile north-west, John Horne Tooke M.P. resided, and wrote his “Diversions of Purley,” a philological work, in the form of dialogues with Sir Francis Burdett. Captain Frank Wigsell Arkwright is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is gravel and sand; subsoil, chalk. The area is 2,241 acres; rateable value, £9,366; the population in 1881 was 382; 1886, 264.
