Historical Description

SEALE is a member of Farnham manor hundred, 3 miles east from Farnham, 1 ½ south from Tongham station on the South Western railway and 38 from London, in the South Western division of the county, Farnham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Farnham, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester, and was formerly a chapelry, but has now been made parochial. The village of Seale is situated on the south side of the foot of the chalk ridge which extends from Guildford to Farnham, but the parish extends to the north side of that hill. The church (name unknown) is a building of stone, in the Early English style, partly rebuilt in the year 1861 and completely restored in 1873, at a cost of about £3,000: it consists of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch and a central tower with spire, containing 6 bells and a striking clock given by the parishioners of Seale and others, and set going by Miss Long, 7 March, 1882: the organ has been greatly enlarged, at a cost of £200: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1620. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £372, net income £286, with residence and 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Surrey, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Thomas Thompson Griffith M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. A charity of £8 16s. yearly, left by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, by will, dated April 24th, in 1627, is for clothing. Seale Lodge is the residence of Mrs. Seawell, and Broad Oak, the seat of Robert Mowbray Howard esq. J.P. The Bishop of Winchester is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Howard, H. M. Chester esq. Mrs. Seawell, H. A. Stevens esq. Mr. E. Hewett, Mr. John Chuter and Henry Mangles esq. The soil on the south side of the hill is sand, upon the hill chalk, and on the north side clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and hops. The area, including Tongham, is 2,993 acres; rateable value, £5,027; and the population in 1881 was 451.

National School (mixed), erected in 1852, for 100 children; average attendance, 62.
