The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of flint with freestone facings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, and is partially covered with ivy: an oak screen separates the chancel from the nave: there are 200 sittings, all being free. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £249, net income £161, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Onslow, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Smith’s charity of £23 yearly, left by will, dated April 24, 1627, by Henry Smith, of Wandsworth, and alderman of London, is strictly for bread and clothing, but is usually distributed in blankets. On a spot here, formerly called “Aldebury,” stood Newark Priory, also denominated Newstead, or De Novo Loco: it was founded by Ruald de Calva, during the reign of Richard I. for canons of the Augustinian order, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Thomas of Canterbury: the south wing of the transept and three bays of the choir, all in the Early English style, still remain. Send Grove, the property of Sir Francis F. E. Drake bart. is now occupied by the Misses Onslow; Send Holme, the property of Mrs. Hargreaves, is occupied by Edward Festus Kelly esq.; Boughton Hall is the residence of Mrs. Paulton; and Woodhill, of Frederick Durrant Deare esq. J.P. In this parish are the manors of Send, with Ripley, Dedswell and Papworth, all belonging to the Earl of Onslow. The area is 5,139 acres of land; rateable value of Send and Ripley is £9,615; the population in 1881 was 1,855.
