Historical Description

SHERE (or Shiere) is a parish and village, agreeably situated at the southern foot of the range of chalk hills, on the Tillingbourn, a feeder of the Wey, 6 miles west from Dorking, 6 east from Guildford, 1 mile west from Gomshall and Shere station on the South Eastern railway, and 35 from London by rail and 29 by road, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, Guildford petty sessional division and union, Guildford and Godalming county court district, Dorking rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese. The church of St. James is an edifice of stone and rubble, in the Early English and Norman styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch, and a central tower with shingled spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells: on the north side of the nave is a small chapel, in the window of which are three red roses and one white: in one of the windows of the south aisle are painted hemp-brakes, the device of Sir Reginald Bray; and in the east window are the arms of England, Ormond, Warren and Clare: there are 500 sittings. A new church was consecrated April 25th, 1889, and will hold 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1691. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £950, with residence, in the gift of Henry Adams esq. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Richard Leonard Adams M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There are charities of upwards of £140 annual value. A Working Men’s Institute is now in course of erection at the cost of the Misses Spottiswoode. Burrows Lea is the residence of Sir Arthur Temple Felix Clay bart. J.P.; Netley Park, of Mrs. Fraser; Ridgeway, of Lord Arthur Russell; and Shere Lodge of Misses Locke-King. The principal landowners are Reginald More Bray esq. who is lord of the manor: Mrs. Fraser, The Right Hon. George Cubitt M.P. P.C., D.L., J.P. of Denbies, Dorking; the Duke of Northumberland K.G. and W. W. Henning esq. The soil on the north side of the hills is chalk, and on the south, sand; subsoil, sand and light loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 6,241 acres; rateable value, £10,664; the population in 1881 was 1,719.

School, built in 1877, for 259 children; average attendance, 140.
