Historical Description

STOKE is a parish and northern suburb of Guildford, lying chiefly within the limits of the borough and situated on the river Wey, over which is a bridge of one arch. It is noticed in Domesday as being in the possession of the King and had formed part of the Crown lands since the reign of Edward the Confessor: it continued to be so held until the sixth year of King John (1204—5), who by charter granted it and all its appurtenances to the church of St. Paul, London. On the deprivation of Bonner, Bishop of London, in the first year of Elizabeth (1558—9), it again came into the hands of the Crown, and was granted to various persons. The church, of St. John the Evangelist is an edifice of flint and stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, with arcades of five arches, west porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells, dated 1620; at the east end of the north aisle is the Stoughton chapel, which contains several brasses, dating chiefly from the early part of the 17th century, to various members of that family, who resided at Stoughton Place, in Stoke, and were lords of the manor: the east window is a memorial to Major-General Sir George Pomeroy-Colley, who fell at Majuba Hill, South Africa, 27th February, 1881, erected by his brother officers of the 2nd Queen’s Royals (Royal West Surrey Regiment): there are also three other memorial windows: there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1575. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £560, with residence in the gift of Simeon's Trustees, and held since 1862 by the Rev. Francis Paynter M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and acting chaplain to the forces at Stoughton barracks. Christ Church chapel of ease, situated in the Waterden road and erected in 1868, is a building in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, north aisle, with an arcade of four arches and a partially-built tower on the north-west, containing one bell: the chapel will seat 620 persons. St. Saviour's iron chapel, situated in the Woodbridge road, was erected in 1876, and will seat about 400.

Parsons' Almshouses, by the side of the road leading from Gilildford to Stoke, and erected for Six widows, in 1796, by William and Henry Parsons, of Guildford, are for poor persons not less than 60 years of age and dwellers in Stoke, or, if such cannot be found there, in the adjoining parish of Worplesdon; each receives 5s. weekly; other charities, producing £70, are distributed yearly.

The present lord of the manor and principal landed proprietor is the Earl of Onslow.
